Armed robbery in Invercargill

An 18-year-old woman feared for her life as man held a knife to her throat and demanded money in a daytime robbery of an Invercargill dairy on Saturday afternoon, the dairy owners said.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Terry, of Invercargill, said the man entered the Pomona St Discount store on the corner of Tramway Rd and Pomona St about 1.50pm, demanded money and then made off on foot.

The entire robbery was caught on the store's surveillance cameras.

Store owner and the victim's auntie Grace Wu said her niece, who is a Chinese student, was in the office at the time and came out believing there was customer to be served. Before she could get to the counter the man grabbed her, held the knife to her throat and demanded money from the till, she said.

Her niece did not look at his face, the knife or hear anything he said, because she was so frightened, Mrs Wu said.

The man made off with about $300.

Mr Terry said once the offender left the store he ran onto Pomona St and it was believed he ran into the Fernworth Primary School grounds, heading east.

The grounds lead onto Saturn St and it was possible the offender made his getaway in that direction, he said.

Anyone who saw the man or had information should contact Invercargill Police.
