An old tradition is returning to Invercargill streets in the form of home milk deliveries.

Christchurch-based company Klondyke Fresh yesterday started a new milk run, complete with a mooing truck.

Initially, the coverage is confined to 100 homes on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Rosedale, with plans to quickly expand across the city.

Milkie Bryan Milne said he expected 50 customers to begin with and was blown away by the level of interest. "I think people appreciate it as a service that becomes part of the household, just like getting the paper in the morning."

It was believed they were the only existing home delivery service in the city, he said. The plan was to increase the network to between 500 and 600 homes before Christmas, he said.

Other traditions, like tokens left at the gate, are also part of the service but glass bottles remained in the past, he said.
