The People's Score

I try to be a legitimate film critic. I really do. That is why I am almost ashamed that I am quite in love with this movie. No, it has nothing to do with the fact that I am a massive nerd. It’s treatment of classic characters, only pissed me off a little bit. And it isn’t like the movie is any good. Because I can assure you, it is almost certainly one of the worst movies of the year. In fact, this might just wrestle the crown of worst movie from Green Lantern. The reason I love this movie is a simple one. Every scene is either hilariously bad, or actually kind of good. Though mostly completely hilarious. Let’s start on a positive note before I begin to rip this movie to shreds. The movie is aware of what it wants to be, and delivers that. The overblown climatic battle sequence is an hour long. Clearly, Bay knows why people watch his movies. Also, the 3-D is pretty great……not a phrase I say often. I was never bored by what happened on screen, unlike another terrible action movie this summer (it rhymes with Green Lantern). And the new cast members were surprisingly good in their roles. Frances McDormand makes a really good, if not completely irrelevant, CIA director. Patrick Dempsey plays what could have been a forgettable businessman with enough gusto as to sell it. Leonard Nimoy plays new transformer, Sentinel Prime, relatively well. John Malkovitch gets a small role playing a character that is fairly typical for the actor; Being a fan of him, I was quite pleased. On the good side from returning actors are John Tarturro, who is just a lovable whack job for a bit, and Tyrese Gibson, Who does what he can with bad material. Also whenever the giant blade worm robot shows up, the fan gets a lot dirtier. Now before I get to the bad parts, let me just remind you once more. I like this movie a lot. None of the faults in the movie really detract from the watching experience. So, here goes. The plot and script are absolute gibberish. Part of this manifests in some truly awful dialogue, and a vast overabundance of unnecessary characters. However, this mainly manifests in a plethora of plot holes, that even puts it’s predecessor to shame. I could write a book exploring all of the plot holes that the movie has and not address half of them . Everybody seems to do stupid things for no apparent reason. But that is okay because most of the movie is spent either watching Shia LaBeouf have the same plot arc as the last two movies in different trappings, or run around with a bunch of giant robots fighting in the background. Which brings me to my next point. The robots are firmly rooted in the background. The vast majority of the conflict is shown from the eyes of a bunch of random army guys in the middle of the fighting. Naturally, Bay being Bay, no opportunity to fellatio the armed forces is wasted. This would not be a bad thing in a movie like Blackhawkdown, but this is a scifi movie about giant robots. I want a scifi movie about giant robots. Also, the fact that Megan Fox has been replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whitely, is strikingly obvious. The new character plays functionally the same role, and seems very shoehorned in. It makes everything she does objectively absurd. Oh right, and Optimus prime is a murder obsessed sociopath, who acts like a character from the Mortal Kombat video games. All in all, a perfect hot mess. But that’s the thing. None of this really hurts the movie in the long run. In fact, I found the movie more enjoyable as the movies plot began to resemble the Sea of Holes. Almost every single second of this piece of junk is a transforming truckload of fun. So yeah. It’s not good at all. But I still can firmly recommend it. I just hope this doesn’t preclude me from ever being a film critic again…. http://www.callitlikeiseeit.com/?p=648 D (B+ if you don’t care about quality) Read More »
