flowed "flow" ep 2011

I Think About His Death”. Se seu ouvido está moldado à trilha sonora cativa de#indiesfestivos, talvez seja melhor nem tentar.

dot dash "spark>flame>ember>ash" 2011

Dot Dash is a post punk pop band from Washington D.C. If this bio had one of those “RIYL/Recommended If You Like” sections, it might drop names like The Jam, Joy Division, or The Byrds… or perhaps it would bring up an apparent appreciation by Dot Dash for the ancient sounds of the Postcard, Whaam and early Creation labels… But those kinds of judgments can really only be made by you, the listener. As is often the case, Dot Dash has a whole “they are ex-members of” thing going on: Guitarist/singer Terry Banks and bassist Hunter Bennett were in punky power poppers Julie Ocean. Before that, Terry was in a bunch of jangly guitar bands, including The Saturday People, Tree Fort Angst, Glo-Worm and St. Christopher. Guitarist Bill Crandall was in the mod/pop band Modest Proposal. Drummer Danny Ingram began musical life in Dischord-label punks Youth Brigade before moving on to Strange Boutique and, later, U.K. guitar-wranglers Swervedriver. Dot Dash plays shows, mostly around D.C., but occasionally out of town, whenever they can. In the recent past they’ve opened for Urge Overkill, The Godfathers, The Trash Can Sinatras, The Chameleons, Hugh Cornwell and The Capstan Shafts.
spark>flame>ember>ash is released by Canadian indie label The Beautiful Music.

minks "by the edge" 2011

Brooklyn's Captured Tracks label doesn't quite have a "house sound," but it is striking how many of their releases share an approach to guitar. Recent records from Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, and Catwalk all have a similar penchant for long, languid melodic lines over gaps of quiet space. You can add to this list the debut LP, By the Hedge, from Boston indie pop outfit Minks. Their first outing has that loose, lovingly warm six-stringed feel all over it, whether it's used to take a song to its end ("Cemetery Rain") or to fill up an entire track (the dolorous instrumental "Indian Ocean").

young dreams "young dreams" ep 2011

Young Dreams have signed to Modular and are releasing a new LP in 2012. As a celebration of sorts, they were kind enough to offer a new band-titled track today that has their beautifully produced tropicalia meets beach boys meets norwegian sound in full force.

junior boys "it's all true" 2011

Ontario’s Junior Boys have been charming us with their soulful brand of electro-pop for a good few years now, but they’ve never sounded as much fun as they do on new album It’s All True.

the weeknd "house of balloons" 2011

The Weeknd is 21-year-old Toronto resident Abel Tesfaye. House of Balloons is his debut album, distributed freely online, and it’s quite unlike any other RnB collection to have emerged in 2011.

the drums "portamento" 2011

Yet Portamento is richer still when it changes tack. Searching for Heaven’s analogue synth burble is perfect for Pierce’s languid declaration, and If He Likes It Let Him Do It (how Morrissey would kill for that title) grows in stature when a Theremin-toned synth soars through the chorus, sounding closer to the uncanny lush pop of The Associates. I Need a Doctor isn’t far behind, either. Next to them, though, Days and In the Cold resemble throwaways. In other words, here’s to The Drums’ Pet Sounds.

real estate "days" 2011

That idyllic tone permeates Days, and in lesser hands could deprive it of tension or variety. But Real Estate have such a knack for classic-sounding melody that every song quickly engages on a musical gut level. It's a quality their music shares with the jangly hooks of early R.E.M., the breeziness of later Pavement, and the garage twang of the Fresh & Onlys. But their closest kin are New Jersey forefathers the Feelies.

ducktails "killing the vibe" ep 2011

However, with a little help from some cleaned up instrumentation, crisped production and an impressive pedigree of new contributors (including Animal Collective vocalist Panda Bear, solo multi-instrumentalist Dent May and Woods’ Jarvis Taveniere), the “remixed” version of “Killin’ The Vibe” doesn’t just render the previous version obsolete, but topples the better part of Ducktails’ entire discography.

blouse "blouse" 2011

Blouse are a hazy Portland trio who picked their name out of a dry cleaner's window and have actively identified as dream pop. But the West Coast threesome's pillowy, nostalgic abstractions veer from the sweeping histrionics of M83 or breezy gestures of various Scandinavians toward a woozy, romantic restlessness: Pains of Being Pure at Heart birthed by Madchester, Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval in The Breakfast Club, Metric for philosophy majors.

slow loris "routine glow" 2011

As it currently stands, Slow Loris is unabashedly a bedroom-pop act. Routine Glow was recorded entirely in Doyle’s Madison apartment, with all of the production quality of a bedroom recording project—which is to say it (like a lot of stuff these days) sounds like Panda Bear. The album’s textures are glossy and cloaked by reverb, but the songs themselves are too thoroughly and familiarly of-the-’90s to be cast into the same pool of over-saturated pop.

hammock "asleep in the downlights" ep 2011

Hammock is an American two-member post-rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. With music created in between production and songwriting projects over the course of two years, Hammock combines live instrumentation, electronic beats, and droning guitar into atmospheric music similar in style to the work of Boards of Canada, Explosions in the Sky, and Stars of the Lid. Here with Steve Kilbey (The Church).

karibean "love, tears & spiritual blessing" ep 2011

Sorrido. Chitarre e melodie, che l'estate è arrivata.

psychic ills "hazed dream" 2011

Hazed Dream is a record that fits more precisely into its time and place. With their mumbled verses and slacker spirituality, Warren's compositions aren't terribly distant from Kurt Vile's effect pedal-enhanced folk-rock, albeit lacking in some of the Philly-based rocker's gift for conjuring pastoral sprawl. In the subdued soloing, you can hear echoes of San Francisco retro noodlers Wooden Shjips. Psychic Ills hung on to their schtick long enough that they seem to have phased back into tune with their peers.
