India’s Supreme Court judgment of 5 July 2011 banned the Salwa Judum militia and the use of Special Police Officers (SPOs) whose meagre wages are subsidised by the central government. The ruling also caused controversy with a heated indictment of the neoliberal development model, accused of causing civil war in Chhattisgarh and putting the country and its constitutional values in danger.
