TED e SOPA

Veoh vs Universal

This Horror Story Shows How SOPA Would Be Bad News For Startups: the costs of the suit, and the tactics used by Universal Music Group, had already forced Veoh to shut its doors.

Ideias :))

Most outrageous reasons people give for being late to work:
9. Employee was late because of a job interview with another firm.
10. Employee had to take a personal call from the state governor (turned out to be true).

Surprise! Surprise!

Surprise! The news shows up in the least expected places: More consumers are getting news incidentally — that is, in the middle of other, non-news activities. And, according to new research, readers often find joy in the serendipity. [...]
[Borchuluun Yadamsuren] identified four types of consumers: avid news readers, news avoiders, news encounterers, and crowd surfers.

Percentagens à atenção dos jornais

Trying a Simple Model: In the print world, costs break down as follows:
Newsroom........................25%
Production, printing.........25%
Distribution......................20%
Marketing promotion.......20%
Administration.................10%

Now let’s move to a fully digital operation derived from a traditional one in terms of journalistic firepower and standards [quadro alterado para apresentar só as percentagens]:
Newsroom...................40%
Production, technical..15%
Marketing promotion..30%
Administration............15%

[...] And I also set aside many things I firmly believe in, like keeping some print operation in the form of a compact, high-end weekly for instance (with a staff of 200, it sounds feasible), developing ancillary products such as digital book publishing, etc. Once again, while I feel my numbers are well-grounded, others will find this little model simplistic and questionable. The simulation is aimed at showing there is a life after the death of the daily print edition. Success is a “mere matter” of persistence.

Princípios

Shifting the discussion to principles:
I. We have the right to connect.
II. We have the right to speak.
III. We have the right to assemble and to act.
IV. Privacy is an ethic of knowing.
V. Publicness is an ethic of sharing.
VI. Our institutions’ information should be public by default, secret by necessity.
VII. What is public is a public good.
VIII. All bits are created equal.
IX. The internet must stay open and distributed.

#pl118, CDs, DVDs e PSs

a) Suportes materiais analógicos, como cassetes áudio ou similares – €0,06 /hora de gravação;
b) Suportes materiais analógicos, como cassetes vídeo ou similares – €0,08 /hora de gravação;
a) Discos compactos (CD) não regraváveis – €0,03 por cada GB de capacidade de armazenamento;
b) Discos compactos regraváveis (CD-RW) – € 0,05 por cada GB de capacidade de armazenamento;
c) Discos versáteis não regraváveis - € 0,03 por cada GB de capacidade de armazenamento;

Façam as contas, ingratos!

Rethinking Growth: What is growth? Is it a temporary process to arrive at a state that we will then want to maintain? Or is growth a process which is itself desirable and is supposed to go on forever? Right now nobody defines a state of sufficiency. [...] The idea of steady-state economics is that growth really should be a temporary process to arrive at some level of sufficiency. [...]
our GDP, our national accounting system, does not separate costs and benefits of growth. Pollution, for instance, is not subtracted as a cost of growth. In fact, the expenditures and efforts to clean up pollution are added as a benefit. This is a strange, asymmetric entry into the accounts, because if you’re not going to count the cost of pollution, then you shouldn’t count its cleanup as a benefit.
