Thestor

And it was here that Thestor, Enop's boy,
Met that circumstance in nature
Gods call Fate, and on this day, men called Patroclus.
Thestor was not a Trojan.
But when King Priam's satraps came from Troy
And asked Sarpedon, Lycia's Prince, for aid,
and he said, 'Yes', - Thestor, the light in Enop's eye,
Applied to leave his management and fight,
And as he reined away, he called:
'Do not forsake me, O my seven meadows,
Until I conquer Greece!'
Though all he conquered was six foot of sand.

Dark gon' catch me here

Sei bem quem afinou esta guitarra.
A mão esquerda do dia à meia-noite.

The creation of life for Zayd on Saturday morning

So let us return to what is contrary to fact. We say that when God (exalted be He!) foreknows that Zayd will be killed Saturday morning, for example, then we [ask], "Would the creation of life for Zayd on Saturday morning be possible or not possible?" The truth is that it is possible and impossible, that is, it is possible by considering it itself if nothing else is taken into account. [The creation of life for Zayd on Saturday morning] is impossible, however, owing to another, not in itself, namely if in addition to [Zayd considered in himself] one takes into account [his being killed] itself and the knowledge itself, since [God's knowledge] would have been turnet into ignorance [if the creation of life for Zayd were to occur on Saturday morning], but it is impossible that [God's knowledge] is turned into ignorance. So it has to become evident that it is possible in itself, but impossible owing to a necessary impossibility in relation do another.

And as he walks

Napoleon's Murat had 50 hats
And 50 plumes each 50 inches high
And 50 uniforms and many more
Than 50 pots of facial mayonnaise
Appropriate to a man with tender skin
He also had 10,000 cavalry,
Split second timing, and contempt for death,

So Providence - had he been born
Later and lowlier - might well have cast Prince Paris.
The centuries have not lied:
Observe the clotted blossom of his hair,
Frost white, frost bright - and beautifully cut,
Queen Aphrodité's favourite Ilian
And though his hands are only archer's hands
(Half Hector's size), his weight half Hector's weight,
He is as tall as Hector (8 foot 9),
And as he walks towards him, note his eyes
As once his father's were: pure sapphire.

A escrita

The River-Merchant's Wife: a Letter

While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,
You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chōkan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.

At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.

At fifteen I stopped scowling,
I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.
Why should I climb the look out?

At sixteen you departed
You went into far Ku-tō-en, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.

You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me. I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
Please let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
aaaaaaaaaAs far as Chō-fū-Sa.

Hochgobernitz

(Segundo Thomas Bernhard)

os primeiros assomos de loucura
trazem a destruição dos campos todos.
no traço inculto das coutadas
mingua a vida
repousam as alfaias

dos quartos vazios de gente
das terras vazias de tudo
sobram apenas muralhas
(ninguém se lembra)

há um prenúncio de tragédia
capaz de vergar os dias
aos trabalhos dolorosos

é o triunfo das gerações
sobre a antiga casa paterna
somente um reflexo de luz
um declínio inteiro

quando saio do quarto onde moro
e venho às muralhas
lembrar-me das coisas

Meet Stephen Joyce

He warned the National Library of Ireland that a planned display of his grandfather’s manuscripts violated his copyright. (The Irish Senate passed an emergency amendment to thwart him.) His antagonism led the Abbey Theatre to cancel a production of Joyce’s play “Exiles,” and he told Adam Harvey, a performance artist who had simply memorized a portion of “Finnegans Wake” in expectation of reciting it onstage, that he had likely “already infringed” on the estate’s copyright. Harvey later discovered that, under British law, Joyce did not have the right to stop his performance.

Disseram:
– Qual a interpretação disto, Profeta de Deus?
Disse ele:
– O conhecimento."

Your life

Your life in danger all your life. Never to rise alone
Before the birds have left their nests,
Then ride along through sunlit, silent woods,
Deep snow to spring flowers in a single day,
And then, the sea...
To miss these things,
When things like these are your inheritance,
Is shameful.

Ajax

Nine days.
And on the next, Ajax,
Grim underneath his tan as Rommel after 'Alamein,
Summoned the army to the common sand,
Raised his five-acre voice, and said:

'Fighters!
Hear what my head is saying to my heart:
Have we forgotten to say our prayers?
One thing is sure: the Trojans, or the mice, will finish us
Unless Heaven helps.
We are not short of those who see beyond the facts.
Let them advise. High smoke can make amends.'

He sits.

Our quietude assents.
Ajax is loved. I mean it. He is loved.
Not just for physical magnificence
(The eyelets on his mesh like runway lights)
But this: no Greek - including Thetis' son -
Contains a heart so brave, so resolute, so true,
As this gigantic lord from Salamis.

Logue's Homer, War Music, 2001 (2nd edition).

***
É a estrutura daquele verso: «Ajax is loved. I mean it. He is loved.», depois repetida no outro «Contains a heart so brave, so resolute, so true», que demonstra como o ritmo em War Music é vital para os poemas: Ajax is loved - because - he contains a heart...
Em Ajax é também a escala imensa: «his five acre voice», «this gigantic lord from Salamis».

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

Kafka

Claudio Magris, Danúbio, Miguel Serras Pereira (trad.), Quetzal, 2010
