Once a month, a top Huawei executive huddles with colleagues to talk about how to bring artificial intelligence into everything the Chinese tech giant makes, from telecom base stations and cloud data centers to ...
Priya’s article this week about retailers flocking to Instagram instead of Amazon got me thinking about growth and where startups are finding it. (I suppose running a business also has something to do with my interest in this topic.)
There have been several major shifts that are making it much harder—and more expensive—for startups to grow. They are worth exploring, because if ...
Tiger Global Management has agreed to invest $600 million to lead a new fundraising round in fast-rising e-cigarette maker Juul, according to two people familiar with the matter. Investors in the round, which has yet to close, have agreed to put in a total of more than $1 billion at a post-round valuation of roughly $16 billion, the people said. on The End of Growth
Isn't it time (finally - because this has been tried and I have invested, without success) for an email system that lets individuals charge senders for access to their inboxes? (yes, with all kinds of bells & whistles & special user-set pricing: free for friends & family, $100 apiece for ex-boyfriends, $20 to read your startup pitch, your money back if user responds, etc.)

on ‘Secret Mining’ Vexes the Crypto Industry
This will continue to happen to alt-coins. Bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that has endured and survived 9+ years of attempts to hack it. on In Scooter Wars, City Ties Might Level Playing Field
The entire bidding process shouldn't exist because bureaucrats shouldn't be the ones who decide who wins in a commercial competition. ...If the city wants to have only 1,250 scooters it should hold an auction and use the money for whatever. In my opinion, the 1,250 limit is a big mistake, but at least do it right.

on Snap Gaming Platform Coming This Fall
The most important reason this has worked for Tencent is that for their ~750m Android users, the Google Play store is banned, creating a vacuum for a dominant App Store provider that WeChat has filled due to their strong network effect.
Snap does not have this advantage. I don’t see any reason to play games in Snapchat just because it is in the app. Millennials already play lots of games, meaning there is lots of competition against existing games.

This story shows that LiDAR tech is not the only competitive advantage for Waymo. Their extensive simulation capabilities enable the necessary regression testing for safe development of this crazy technology.
