Quick facts: This fluidized-bed plant was developed by PSEG Global at a site 8km northwest of Katowice in Silesia. The new plant is adjacent to and replaced Elektrownia Chorzów, which had a CHP dating to the early 1950s. At completion, this project represented Poland’s largest IPP financing and it has a 20yr PPA with Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne for 100% of the electric output. The local heating company, Przedsiebiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej buys the thermal output. In May 2006, CEZ acquired PSEG’s interests in Elcho (89%) and Skawina (75%) for €180mn.

Jaworzno II Rebuild

Jaworzno III

Quick facts: The first power generation at this site was in 1898 when two 160-kW units were installed at the Fryderyk August coal mine. By 1959, Jaworzno I reached 157 MW of installed capacity. It was retired in 1998. Jaworzno III has been modernized and retrofit with advance emissions control equipment. The stack is 300m high.

Quick facts: This is the world’s first supercritical CFB power plant. The contract was signed on 30 Dec 2002, engineering NTP was given 1 Mar 2003, and full construction NTP was on 31 Dec 2005. The unit went into operation on 7 Jul 2009. Metso Automation provided a complete DCS system based on metsoDNA technology. The boiler can burn biomass and the design also included an option to burn coal slurry. Lagisza III cost about €400mn.
