Quick facts: This plant was developed by Sithe Energies and is now owned by Macquarie Power & Infrastructure. Electricity is sold to Electricity Financial Corp (OEFC) under a long-term power purchase agreement until 2014. The facility also sells steam and compressed air to Canada Starch Operating Co (CASCO) the largest corn refining plant in Canada, under a contract expiring in 2015. Natural gas is supplied under a long-term gas supply agreement with Husky Energy until 2015.

Goreway

Quick facts: Goreway went commercial on 11 Jun 2009. It is located on a 20ha site in Brampton and is connected to Hydro One's 230kV transmission system. Ontario Power Authority has a 20yr PPA with the plant. A new underground gas pipeline was built to the station by Enbridge Gas Distribution. Goreway is the largest gas-fired power plant in Canada and cost C$942mn. Sithe Global is 80% owned by Blackstone Group. The plant was delayed for about two years due to financial issues at Global Power Equipment Group.

Pearson Airport

Quick facts: This is the first plant of its kind in Canada and supplies electricity plus thermal energy for heating and cooling. Pearson Airport’s peak electrical demand is about 38 MW and this is expected to rise to about 70 MW by 2015. Surplus electricity is sold to the grid under a Clean Energy Supply contract between GTAA and Ontario Power Authority. Development began in 1998 and studies began in 2002/03 following provincial deregulation of electricity supply in May 2002. In Jan 2004, the GTAA Board voted to proceed with the construction of the plant and hired SNC-Lavalin as EPC and operations contractor. Construction started in Jul 2004 and the plant went online in Feb 2006.

Portlands

Quick facts: The Portlands Energy Centre project was launched in 2002 by a 50:50 partnership of Ontario Power Generation and TransCanada. The site is adjacent to the 1,200-MW Hearn power station in an industrial section of Toronto's Portlands district. Hearn was built in the late 1940s by Ontario Hydro as a coal-fired plant burned coal. It was then converted to burn natural gas and finally switched back to coal for a short time. The station was retired from service in 1983 and is leased by Ontario Power Generation to Studios of America, which plans to convert the facility to a film production complex.
