INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory
- 06/06/2009O INL – International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory was created by joint initiative of Portugal na Spain, assumed in November 2005, in Évora, at the XXI Portugal-Spain Summit. It is the most recent scientific research organization created in Europe, the first in the Iberian Peninsula, and also the first in the world specifically dedicated to nanotechnology. Presently being built in Braga, Portugal, the Laboratory will develop a world level scientific policy and recruitment programme.

Committees/Groups in which UMIC Assures the Representation or Participation of Portugal and respective delegates within the INL:

The supreme body of the INL is the Council whose members representing the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal are Luis Magalhães (Chairman), President of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), João Sentieiro, President of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), Carolina Rego Costa, Adjunct to the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, and those representing the Ministry of Science and Innovation, of Spain are Montserrat Torné, Director-General of International Cooperation and Institutional Relations, José Manuel Labastida, Director-General of Research and Management of the National IDI Plan, and Fernando Briones, Research Professor of the Agency Board of Scientific Research (CSIC). Since it started functioning, about one and a half year ago, in January 2008, the Council has had six meetings. The Laboratory is headed by a Director-General, José Rivas, and a Deputy Director-General, Paulo Freitas, appointed by the Council on May 28, 2008 (see Council of the INL Nominates Higher Officials and Establishes the Initial Orientations for the Laboratory (in Portuguese)). - General Assembly of the Installation Commission of the INL
President: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC. Since it started functions in May 2007 up to mid 2009 the General Assembly of the Installation Commission of the INL met 6 times. - Technical Bilateral Commission for Preparation of the INL
Coordinator of the Portuguese delegation: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC. Coordinator of the Spanish delegation: initially Salvador Berbera, Secretario-General de Politica Cientifica y Tecnologica, and afterwards Francisco Marcellán, Secretario-General de Politica Cientifica y Tecnologica. Technical Bilateral Commission for Preparation of the INL met 4 times, in 2007.
Regarding involvement in the INL, there were also participations in the following:
- Scientific Advisory Council of INL (December 3, 2007, Lisbon; 23-24 January 2009, Braga): Luis Magalhães (President of the Council and of the General Assembly of the Installation Commission of INL), President of UMIC.
- INL-MIT Meetings (Outubro 31, 2008 at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; November 22, 2008, and January 26, 2009, Lisbon) for preparing an acordo para um programa conjunto de recrutamento de Investigadores Principais e de colaboração em investigação (in Portuguese): Luis Magalhães (President of the Council and of the General Assembly of the Installation Commission of INL), President of UMIC.
