"Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of alternative exterior wall system for a house in Portugal: Comparison of two LCIA methods", Trabalho apresentado em International Sustainable Buildings Symposium (ISBS), In Proceedings of the International Sustainable Buildings Symposium (ISBS), Ankara.
ABSTRACT: Buildings have a major determining role both on energy consumption and on environmental impacts. One critical factor is the building envelope, which is very important for the overall performance of buildings thermal energy requirements, but that, during the construction phase, requires a considerable amount of materials, with associated embodied energy and environmental burdens. The main goal of this paper is to assess alternative building envelope options with the aim of supporting decision at project level of new buildings in Portugal, regarding the selection of exterior wall systems with reduced life cycle energy requirements and environmental impacts. A life cycle model for buildings has been developed focusing on alternative external wall systems (single, double) and contemporary materials (brick, hollow brick, lightweight concrete blocks, wood). The model has been implemented for a single family house located in Portugal. Seven scenarios for alternative exterior wall solutions have been defined. The various exterior wall solutions studied were defined to have similar thermal coefficients and thus similar heating and cooling requirements to permit a straightforward comparison of the building energy and environmental life cycle (LC) performance. A comprehensive life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) is presented, including results for two well-known LCIA methods: CML2001 and Eco-indicator’99, which are compared on their performance through application to the same life cycle inventory for a single-family house in Portugal.

2. Monteiro, Helena; Freire, Fausto. 2010. "Life cycle assessment of a Portuguese house with alternative heating systems and different building envelopes", Trabalho apresentado em Congress of Innovation on Sustainable Construction, In Innovation on Sustainable Construction, Curia.
ABSTRACT. To improve buildings overall performance towards more sustainable solutions, a life-cycle (LC) approach should be followed. The main goal of this paper is to assess a single-family house considering alternative heating systems and building envelopes to support decision at project level towards optimal LC energy and environmental performance. We have developed a comprehensive LC model focusing on several alternatives: 7 heating systems; 7 building envelopes and 2 operational patterns. To assess energy and environmental impacts, results with two life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods – Cumulative Energy Demand (CED) and CML 2001 – have been calculated. Results with both LCIA methods indicate wood wall (H6) as the preferable envelope option. Concerning the heating systems, major differences have been found. CED results indicate the wood heater (G) as the preferable system. However, for CML 2001, contradicting results can be observed and 3 systems (wood heater, natural gas condensing boiler and solar collector combined with condensing boiler) show the lowest impact in different impact categories. The results show that the most significant LC phase (pre-use or use) is strongly associated with occupation and comfort levels. It is concluded that an optimal selection of both heating systems and building envelopes is very important for the improvement of the house overall life-cycle performance.

"Life cycle energy and environmental assessment of alternative exterior wall systems", Trabalho apresentado em Portugal SB10: Sustainable Building Affordable to All - Low Cost Sustainable Solutions, In IISBE Portugal SB10 proceedings - Sustainable buildings affordable to all, Vilamoura.
ABSTRACT: Buildings have a major determining role both on energy consumption and on environmental impacts. One critical factor is the building envelope, which is very important for the buildings’ thermal energy requirements, but that requires a considerable amount of materials, with associated embodied energy and environmental burdens. The main motivation for this study is to assess alternative building envelope options with the goal of supporting decision at project level of new buildings in Portugal. A life cycle (LC) model for a single-family house in Portugal has been developed. Two alternative functional units have been considered: the building living area over the life span period and a square meter of living area over a year. The LC primary energy requirements and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of the house have been calculated. Seven alternative exterior wall solutions with different materials (brick, concrete block and wood) have been assessed.
