As a student may I request a residence permit?

Yes, as a student of the High School or University you may request residence permit as long as you meet all the necessary conditions.
As a student of Higher Education
To be given a temporary AR to students of higher education, the applicant must meet the following special condition, besides the general conditions already mentioned:
  • Show proof of enrolment and payment of fees demanding by the institution;
  • Show means of subsistence;
  • Be covered by the National Health Service or hold a health insurance.
  • The residence permit is valid for a period of a year and it is renewable for equal periods. If the length of the study programs is less than an year, the residence permit has the necessary length to cover the study period.
 
As a student of High School
To be given a temporary AR to students of higher education, the applicant must meet the following special condition, besides the general conditions already mentioned:
  • Be registered in an high school 
  • Be covered by the National Health Service (SNS) or hold a health insurance;
  • The validity of the residence permit may not exceed a year and is renewable for equal periods provided that the granting conditions remain. 
 
You may, however only outside the considered period of the study program upon a previous authorization of SEF and provided that you hold a work contract celebrated within the law. On the moment of residence request it is also necessary the registration at the Social Security.
If the request is dismissed, a replacing residence title will be issued with the same nature and length of the original, in which is mention the authorization to work.
 
Exceptionally the residence permit may be granted for effects of studying in an university provided that the following conditions are met:
  • Has entered and remains legally in Portugal;
  • Exhibit proof of enrolment and payment of the fee demanded by that institution;
  • Show means of subsistence;
  • Be covered by the National Health Service or hold a health insurance.
 

These residence permits may be cancelled or not renewed if the holder:

  • Does not meet or no longer meets the specific conditions that have determined the concession of a visa or residence permit in question; or
  • Perform a subordinated professional activity when such is forbidden or outside the condition in which it is allowed; or
  • Do not succeed in the studies.
