How do I apply for a bachelor degree
1. National Contest for Admissions to Higher Education
The application to public higher education is conducted annually through a national competition organized by the Direção Geral de Ensino Superior. The national competition is held at the end of the school year and is organized in three phases, in accordance with the calendar approved annually. The whole process is conduct by the National Access to Higher Education Commission which is responsible for attesting student capacity to attend the selected course, as well as the setting of selection and ranking criteria of candidates for registration and enrolment in higher education.
WHO may APPLY?
a. Holder of a secondary education diploma, or equivalent;
b. Take, or have taken within the last two years, the national exams corresponding to those required for entry in the course(s) and faculty(ies) they will apply for;
c. Fulfil any prerequisites required by the school/course they will apply for;
When and how may I apply?
The contest takes place at the end of the academic year, after national secondary school final exams and application must be filled online through the Directorate General for Higher Education – Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior (DGES) portal. More information can be found in Portal da DGES.
2. Special Regimes
Besides the National Contest for Admissions to Higher Education, it is possible to apply for the bachelor degree in IPLeiria through a set of special regimes for candidates on particular context. Application to special regimes is national and it’s coordinate by General Directorate of Higher Education which commands the actions on access and entry in higher education by this way.
WHO MAY APPLY?
The beneficiaries of the special regimes for access to higher education are the students in the following situations:
- Portuguese officials in national diplomatic missions in foreign countries, and their family;
- Portuguese citizens in official missions abroad, and their family;
- Foreign officials in diplomatic missions accredited in Portugal, and their family;
- Permanent staff of Portuguese armed forces;
- National scholarship holders from African Portuguese speaking countries;
- High performance athletes;
- Timor-Leste’s naturals, and their children.

3. Special Contest
WHO MAY APPLY?
Besides the general regime and the special regimes there are also special contests for applicants with specific qualifications allowing new publics to access higher education in a perspective of lifelong learning. The special contests for admission to higher education are intended for students with specific characteristics and are organised by the IPLeiria. The institute defines vacancies and selection criteria for each contest and manages the application process.
a. Applicants over 23 years old who have passed special exams proving their ability to access to higher education;
b. Holders of higher education diploma;
c. Holders of a specialization technological course (non higher education post-secondary course)1;

1 Specific Exams for holders of a technological specialization diploma or a vocational high school diploma to access higher education:
From the academic year 2016-2017 the holders of a technological specialization diploma will be subject to an entrance test for admission to higher education. The list of tests to be carried out will be available shortly on this page.
The timetable for carrying out the specific entrance tests will be as follows :
Application for the 1st phase of the test : April 1 to May 20, 2016 *
Tests of 1st phase: 6 to 9 June 2016 *
Application for 2nd phase of the test : 4 to July 11, 2016 *
Tests of 2nd phase: 18 July 22, 2016 *

4. RE-ADMISSION, TRANSFER OR COURSE CHANGE
WHO MAY APPLY?
May apply to the regimes of Course Change or Transfer the students who:
a. Have been registered and enrolled in a course of higher education at a national institution of higher education;
b. Have been registered and enrolled at a foreign institution of higher education in a course defined as being of higher education by that country’s legislation, but have not completed it;

5. Special Contest for International Students
Since march 2014 the portuguese government has designed a mechanism for international students – International Student Status – allowing non-Portuguese or non-European Union students (with certain exceptions) to apply to a master or a graduation degree. With this statute you will be able to find access and entry conditions, applications and registrations as well as fees and places.
WHO MAY APPLY?
Applying for an IPLeiria graduation program under the ISS, requires one of the following conditions:
a.Hold qualifications granting access to higher education, such as a diploma or certificate issued by a competent authority in the country of origin that attests to the completion of an education programme and confers the right to apply and be admitted to higher education in Portugal.
b. Hold a diploma that is legally equivalent to Portuguese secondary education.
VACANCIES
Admission requirements
a. Applicants shall demonstrate their knowledge in specific academic qualifications required for the portuguese entrance exams for the course in question. The level as well as content should be equivalent to the students admitted by General Regime of admissions to Portuguese higher education.
b. When applicant holds a level of secondary portuguese education or equivalent the verification of the access qualifications to the study cycle will be based on the portuguese entrance exams classifications.
c. Applicants that come from a foreigner education system and hold the – ENEM – or other equivalent certificate, entrance exams and weighing will set by the IPLeiria President.
d. In all other situations , the applicant, by self-initiative, can perform the Portuguese entrance exams or held in IPLeiria an equivalent entrance exam for the course he is applying to.
Portuguese Language
The attendance of any IPLeiria’s bachelor programs requires an independent user of the portuguese language in which the course is taught ( B2 level) , according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). International students who do not have the B2 level may apply with the condition to attend in IPLeiria a language training in in which the course is taught until they reach the required level students who have attended secondary school in the language is taught the course they are applying will not need to attend the language course.
What documents are required?
a. Copy of a valid identification document issued by the home country authorities;
b. Certificate of Portuguese secondary education or equivalent;
c. Certificate issued by a competent authority attesting the passing of an education program and give them the right to apply to higher education in the country in which it was awarded;
d. Copies of the following supporting documents with the obtained classifications:
Portuguese entrance exams: For those who holds a Portuguese Secondary School Leaving Certificate or equivalent and for international students that by self-initiative have made the portuguese exams;
The national examination for entry to higher education: For applicants holding a high school diploma – ENEM – or other instruments that confer the same qualification.
