Linguateca is a distributed resource centre for the computational processing of the Portuguese language which has the aim of:
- Facilitating access to existing resources, through developing network access services, and maintaining a portal which provides useful information.
- Developing resources considered more urgent in cooperation with interested parties in a harmonious manner.
- Organising joint evaluations which involve the community as a whole.
Linguateca is supported as a project of the Foundation for National Scientific Computation (FCCN) (site in Portuguese) and co-financed by community funds from the Operational Programme for the Knowledge Society (POSC) and with national funds made available by Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC).
Linguateca is the continuation of the Computational Processing of Portuguese project which took place at SINTEF from May 1998 to May 2000, and presently has the following distributed structure:
- Oslo Centre at SINTEF (page in Portuguese), which started in May 2000;
- Braga Centre at the Informatics Department of Universidade do Minho (page in Portuguese), which started in November 2000;
- Odense Centre at VISL (page in Portuguese), which started in November 2000;
- Porto Centre at CLUP/FLUP (page in Portuguese), which started in October 2002;
- Lisboa COMPARA Centre at FCCN (page in Portuguese), which started in November 2002;
- Lisboa Centre at XLDB/LasiGE/FCUL (page in Portuguese), which started in January 2004;
- Coimbra Centre at UC (page in Portuguese), which started in July 2005.
The work of the Linguateca can be divided into three strands Information – Resources – Evaluation:
- Information: Keeping a portal about computational processing of the Portuguese language, containing:
- Catalogue of Resources (Corpora, Lexicons and Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias, Services involving the computational processing of Portuguese, Pedagogic Material, Media, Texts in Portuguese, etc.);
- Catalogue of interested parties (Groups, centres and institutes, Projects, European Projects, International projects, Associations and institutions, Companies, Personal Web Pages, etc.);
- Catalogue of computational tools;
- Catalogue of publications on the computational processing of the Portuguese language;
- a forum on matters relating to the computational processing of the Portuguese language, containing news, job offers and announcements of conferences and courses;
- a repository for a network of theses and other work in the area;
- a search engine for the area of the computational processing of Portuguese , built to enable easy navigation through its portal (with four different ways of interacting: searching for people, searching for publications, searching via keywords and free text searching in pages linked to by the portal).
- Resources: It provides access to resources for Portuguese language engineering, as well as services making resources available. Amongst the most well-known and used resources are CETEMPúblico, COMPARA, Corpógrafo and AC/DC. Mention should also be made of the range of tools available from the programs written within the framework of the Linguateca project.
- Evaluation: Promotion of a joint evaluation model for Portuguese.
