Applications and Digital Content Research Stimulus Prize

The Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), the UT Austin – Portugal Programme, and the company ZON Multimédia launched an Applications and Digital Content Research Stimulus Prize on 3 April 2008 at a ceremony celebrating the agreement signed at the vice-chancellor’s office of the Universidade do Porto.

The Prize covers the Applications, Multimedia Content and Short Films categories, with an overall pool of 200,000 Euros and research grants awarded by the FCT. The winning work in each of the categories will receive an award of 50,000 Euros and a research grant awarded by the FCT. The best piece of work among the winners of the three categories will become the absolute winner of the "Multimedia Creativity Prize" and will be awarded a Grand Prize of 50,000 Euros in addition to the prize given for winning the category.

The research grants awarded by the FCT may be of the following kind, depending on the candidates’ requirements: (a) grant to take part in research activities for undergraduates; (b) PhD grant for graduates or Masters students; or (c) post-doctorate grant to join research teams and projects in course within the scope of CoLab in Portugal and including a temporary stay at the University of Texas in Austin, USA.

The UT Austin – Portugal Programme, which was signed a year ago under the Partnerships for the Future action launched by FCT with the aim of developing Knowledge Networks , covers, among other objectives, joint exploration of Emerging Technologies based on research and post-graduate education in Digital Content areas, as well as putting CoLab, International Collaboratory for Emerging Technologies into operation.

ZON Multimédia is funding the Prize, the FCT is providing co-funding through the allocation of grants and CoLab is sponsoring the winner or one co-collaborator to join research teams and projects in Portugal, including a temporary stay at the University of Texas in Austin, USA.

The agreement will be signed by the President of the FCT, João Sentieiro, by the CoLab Director, António Câmara, and by the President of ZON Multimédia, Rodrigo Costa. It shall enter into force on the date of its signature for a period of one year and shall be renewed automatically for successive periods of equal length.
