5th eCommerce week

5th eCommerce week logo The 5th eCommerce Week, organised by ACEP – Association for eCommerce in Portugal (site in Portuguese) in partnership with Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), was held from 16th to 25th October 2008. It included various initiatives, of which the following are of note:

  • 18th and 20th October: Free distribution of the Practical Guide Buying on the Internet with the Jornal de Notícias, Diário de Notícias and Público newspapers (310,000 copies).
  • 20th October, 10.00-12.00: TSF Forum dedicated to eCommerce, featuring the President of ACEP – Association for eCommerce in Portugal and the President of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) live in the studio.
  • 22nd and 23rd October, 10.00-10.30: Digital Business Conference Lisbon'08. This conference kicked off with a session chaired by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago, with the guest speaker Chris Anderson, author of the book The Long Tail and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Wired. The conference topics were: e-business adoption and trends throughout the world and in Portugal; benefits, opportunities and risks of e-business; e-business legal and fiscal framework; electronic business processes including contracting and eInvoicing, mobile commerce; digital marketing; national and international case studies, online banking; systems and processes in the value chain in e-commerce and best practices, certification systems and market regulation.

    The opening session was chaired by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago, followed by an intervention by the President of ACEP, Alexandre Nilo Fonseca, who presented the prospects for ACEP action. The President of Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães, then made an intervention on the situation of eCommerce in Portugal, on the development of how the majority of eCommerce is conducted not on Internet browsers, but on other electronic communication networks, in particular mobile phones, sensor networks and in certain countries, as is the case in Portugal with the MULTIBANCO system, through ATM networks. With this in mind, he referred to the opportunities and challenges related to the development and use of Information and Communication Technologies in the context of the “Internet of the Future” in aspects which, from an R&D point of view, are being taken into consideration in the Science and Technology programmes in progress.

  • Winner of the 3rd ACEP Navegantes XXI Prize announced.
  • The Competition/Leisure activity “Your electronic purchases will be on wheels” open to public participation from 16th October to 9th November.

This initiative is supported by the Knowledge Society Operational Programme, with community funding, and is taking place following similar initiatives jointly organised by ACEP – Association for eCommerce in Portugal (site in Portuguese) and Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) over the last two years: 4th eCommerce Week (text in Portuguese), 3rd eCommerce Week (text in Portuguese).
