The public session to present the results of the Leiria Digital Region project took place at a ceremony chaired by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education at Castelo de Ourém, on 15 July 2008, starting at 11:00.
This project is one of the 33 projects forming part of Digital Cities and Digital Regions which has been carried out throughout Portugal in order to implement the Digital Portugal project, envisaged in 2000 as part of the Operational Information Society Programme (POSI), and later continued in the Knowledge Society Operational Programme (POSC).
Together these 33 projects cover 287 of the country’s 308 municipalities and roughly 95% of the entire national territory.
The Leiria Digital Region project has been carried out through a partnership established between the Joint Municipal Association for Alta Estremadura (AMAE), the Leiria/Fátima Tourist Region, the Leiria Business Association (NERLEI), the Technological Industry Centre for Moulds, Special Tools and Plastics (Centimfe), and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
Following the ceremony a working meeting was held involving the Heads of the Regional Coordination and Development Committees (CCDR) from the whole of the country, invited by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, with a view to planning future open-ended Information Society developments through the Digital Cities and Digital Regions projects. This meeting was attended by the President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC).
With a total investment of over 200 million euros, the Digital Cities and Digital Regions projects entail e-government solutions for local government, conditions to beef up the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises and a wide array of citizen-centred services, such as information, health and safety, social support, education, culture, etc.
