UMIC President elected Vice President of the OECD's ICCP Committee

Logotipo da OCDE Luis Magalhães, President of Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), was elected today, 11th December 2008, to the Bureau of the OECD’s Information, Computers and Communication Policy Committee (ICCP) as Vice President of this Committee, together with representatives from Germany, Canada (President), the United States of America, Finland, Italy, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

This Committee (ICCP – Information, Computer and Communications Policy) operates within the OECD’s DSTI – Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry and is responsible for promoting the necessary regulatory policies and environments for the growth of the Internet and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as drivers of innovation, productivity, growth and social well-being. 

There are working parties that report back to the Committee on the following topics:

  • The Information Economy (Working Party on the Information Economy)
  • Information Security and Privacy (Working Party on Information Security and Privacy)
  • Communication Infrastructures and Services Policy (Working Party on Communication Infrastructures and Services Policy)
  • Indicators for the Information Society (Working Party on Indicators for the Information Society).

The ICCP organised the successful Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy (text in Portuguese) in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on 17th -18th June 2008, with the subheading “Shaping Policies for Creativity, Confidence and Convergence in the Digital World”, which was organised in 5 round tables with the following topics:

The Portuguese Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago, was one of the 5 Vice Presidents at this Ministerial Meeting and chaired the “Promoting Creativity” Round Table.

The Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy (text in Portuguese) to a large extent set the general guidelines for the ICCP Committee’s work for the immediate future.  The 55th Meeting of the OECD’s Information, Computers and Communication Policy Committee (text in Portuguese) took place in Seoul immediately after the Ministerial Meeting for initial stocktaking of this meeting, preliminary discussion of the consequences for future work topics and for discussion of the ICCP Committee’s draft working programme and budget. The Meeting of the OECD’s Information, Computers and Communication Policy Committee (56th session) took place in Paris on 11th – 12th December 2008.
