Meeting of the High Level Group on Internet Governance (Feb 2009)

Internet Governace logo, High Level Group(HLIG) The HLIG – High Level Group on Internet Governance, an informal group of experts advising the European Commission, met on 4th February 2009 in Brussels. Their main goal was to discuss the European Union position for the multi-stakeholder public consultations being held on 23rd - 24th February 2009 at the UN in Geneva.

The HLIG also discussed the future of the ICANN – Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, considering various possible scenarios, now the new US Administration has taken office and bearing in mind that the protocol linking the ICANN to the US Department of Commerce terminates in September.

The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), as the institution responsible for providing the national delegation at the HLIG, represented Portugal at this meeting in the person of UMIC’s Head of International Relations, Ana Cristina Neves.
