1st Annual CMU-Portugal Conference: "Boot and Re-Connect"

Carnegie Mellon University logoThe first annual Conference of the CMU – Portugal Program, on the theme Economy 3.0: Re-Boot and Re-Connect, took place on 22 June 2009, in the Palácio da Bolsa, Porto. The aim of the conference was to publicly present the current results of this program and set its research agenda for the future.

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Prime Minister, José Sócrates, and included the presence of the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago. Those participating in the conference included professors and researchers from national institutions and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as representatives of the main enterprises linked to the program, including Portugal Telecom, Novabase, Nokia-Siemens, Critical Software, Biodevices and Porto Editora.

The aims of the Conference included the search for new actions to be undertaken in response to doubts over the economic model caused by the current financial crisis. Participants discussed future sustainable solutions, based on thematic networks and research consortia, capable of responding to the new challenges placed by the Economy.

The conference also presented and debated the new strategy document prepared by the Program Directors, the foundations of which had been analysed at the 5th Meeting of the Board of Directors of the CMU – Portugal Program, chaired by Luis Magalhães, President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), which took place at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, USA, on 27 and 28 May 2009.

The CMU – Portugal Program was started on 27 October 2007 under the scope of the Knowledge Networks activity, which forms part of the Commitment to Science for Portugal’s Future initiative The main areas of its teaching and research activities are: Processing and Information Networks, including Software Engineering, Information Networks, Information Security and Computational Processing of Language, Sensor Networks and Technologies, Public Policies and Technological Innovation, and Mathematics.

This program, along with the other Knowledge Networks programs, has boosted the range of internationally recognised PhD programs offered by Portuguese Universities and led to dynamic research and advanced training in areas of recognised interest and potential within an international framework. There are nowadays in place S&T thematic networks in strategic areas for Portugal, working with enterprises and other national institutions, and promoting the international expression of national institutions.
