The Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth), USA, launched a program of cooperation in training and research in strategic areas concerning the North Atlantic on June 24, 2009 on the island of Horta, in the Azores, in a ceremony presided over by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago and which included the presence of the Chancellor of UMass Dartmouth, Jean MacCormach, as well as other academics involved in the program.
The University of the Azores, as well as IMAR-Azores, are involved under the terms of the agreement which seeks to develop marine science and technology through an interdisciplinary approach and the promotion of scientific cooperation.
The Joint FCT - UMass Dartmouth Program has three main areas of activity:
- Marine science, through the involvement of the American university and Portuguese research units, namely the IMAR Centre of the University of the Azores, in Horta, carrying out joint research and postgraduate study activities.
- Renewable energy, specifically within the Green Islands project, which is being developed within the framework of the MIT-Portugal Program.
- Climate change, through joint assessment of the possibility of setting up an observatory in the Azores.
The agreement establishes two immediate steps:
- Prepare and enable UMass Dartmouth’s affiliation to the Green Islands project within the MIT-Portugal Program.
- Start a program that allows graduates from the UMass Dartmouth to undergo six-month internships at Portuguese R&D institutions in the areas mentioned, and graduates from Portuguese institutions to participate in UMass Dartmouth activities for similar lengths of stay.
In 2007 the Portuguese Government initiated international partnerships involving Portuguese universities and institutions which are world leaders in scientific research aimed at innovative projects that contribute effectively to enhancing scientific capabilities and advanced training in Portugal, under the scope of the Knowledge Networks activities integrated within the Commitment to Science for Portugal’s Future initiative.
