1st Regional Meeting of the Internet Spaces Network - Setúbal District

Logo of the Internet Spaces Project The 1st Regional Meeting of the Internet Spaces Network was held in the Auditorium of the Municipal Library of Palmela on 9 June 2010. It was targeted at the monitors and all those responsible for the 51 Internet Spaces in the Setúbal District. Organized by The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), in collaboration with the Palmela Municipal Council, more than 50 people attended the meeting, with 27 Internet Spaces represented (text in Portuguese) from 11 of the 13 Municipalities in the Setúbal District (see Meeting Programme - text in Portuguese).

The Regional Meetings of the Internet Spaces Network have the aims of:

  • Promoting the exchange of best practice and the dissemination of initiatives and activities for Internet Spaces;
  • Promoting collaboration between monitors and those responsible for Internet Spaces;
  • Analysing the coordination and development of activities which promote the use of ICT and e-Inclusion;
  • Reinforcing and giving value to the joint contribution of different individuals and their engagement with developing and strengthening the Internet Spaces Network as a powerful national means of enabling inclusion.

At this Meeting five examples of best practice for Internet Spaces were presented and monitors were encouraged to share experiences. Further details of this can be found in the programme.

The Internet Spaces Network consists of approximately 1 100 Internet Spaces functioning in various parts of the Country, set up as a resulting of various programmes: some were set up using specific public hardware in municipalities and were located in charities, in Public Libraries, in Centres for e-Inclusion as part of the Choices Programme, in Digital Cities and Digital Regions, in Employment and Training Centres, in Cultural, Recreational and Sporting Associations, and Computer Clubs (the Azores) and in Living Science Centres.

The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) promotes and updates the Internet Spaces Network Portal (site in Portuguese) which is open to the general public.
