Central and Local Public Administration invests in Broadband

68% growth over the last year for Municipal Councils with a broadband connection of above 2 Mbps.

40% growth over the last year for Municipal Councils with online discussion forums between local government representatives and citizens. 

Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) today publishes data on central and local government use of information and communication technologies in 2006 obtained from two surveys: one for Central Government and the other for Local Government.
The following results from the surveys are of note:

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

  • 32% growth over the last year for Central Government bodies with a broadband connection of above 2 Mbps.
  • 50% growth over the last year for Central Government bodies providing services online using information and functions stored on the databases of other bodies.
  • All Public Administration Bodies have an Internet connection, 77% with a speed of or above 512 Kbps, while 49% of bodies have connections of or above 2 Mbps.
  • 88% of Central Government Bodies have an Internet site, while this figure is considerably higher for bodies with 50 to 249 employees (92%) and with more than 250 employees (96%).
  • 27% of Central Government Bodies order online.

MUNICIPAL COUNCILS

  • 68% growth over the last year for Municipal Councils with a broadband connection of above 2 Mbps.
  • 40% growth over the last year for Municipal Councils with online discussion forums between local government representatives and citizens. 
  • 93% of Municipal Councils have an Internet connection with a speed of or above 512 Kbps, while 64% have connections of or above 2 Mbps.
  • 96% of Municipal Councils have their own website on the Internet.
  • 36% of Municipal Councils with their own website hold online public consultations with citizens.
  • 43% and 30% of Municipal Councils use open source software for operating systems and for Internet servers respectively.
