2nd Ministerial EUROMED Conference on the Information Society

= Logo of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership The 2nd EUROMED Ministerial Conference on the Information Society – Building an Enabling Environment for the EUROMED Information Society was held on 26-27 February 2008 in Cairo, Egypt.

The following topics were examined at the conference:

  • The future for EUROMED cooperation in the area of the Information Society, including growth trends, investment, qualifications and social impact.
  • The main cooperation topics:
  1. regulatory reform;
  2. the future of the EUMEDIS and EUMEDCONNECT programmes;
  3. participation in IST FP7 and other related programmes.
  • Improving cooperation schemes and information exchange: working groups, Internet portals, exchanging best-practices, researchers and students.

The Portuguese delegation was headed by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education and included the President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC).

The conference was preceded by a “Senior Officials” meeting where Portugal was represented by the President of UMIC who also represented the Portuguese Presidency of the EU at the 2nd EUROMED Forum on the Information Society, which was held on 25 October 2007. Support projects were discussed for the research and education network under the EUMEDCONNECT linked to the European GÉANT2 network, other e-Infrastructures projects, including GRID Computing in the scope of the EUMEDGRID project, projects under the EU’s 7th Framework Programme for Research, cooperation in telecommunications regulation and preparation for the 2nd EUROMED Ministerial Conference on the Information Society.

A joint statement was approved at the 2nd Ministerial EUROMED Conference on the Information Society.
