The 316th meeting of CREST – Scientific and Technical Research Committee, chaired by the Deputy Director General for Research at the European Commission, Zoran Stancic, will take place in Ponta Delgada on 11th – 12th October 2007.
This is the 2nd CREST meeting under the Portuguese Presidency of the EU. The previous CREST meeting was held in Brussels in the first week of the Presidency. The first point on the agenda is Presidency information, which shall include reference to the results of the “The Future of Science in Europe” High Level Conference held over the course of the three previous days in Lisbon, as well as the upcoming R&D events planned under the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, which will be presented by the head of the Portuguese delegation, Luis Magalhães, President of Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC).
The meeting agenda also includes: information from the European Commission, discussion of the preliminary results from the public consultation on the Green Paper on the European Research Area, point related to monitoring progress towards the goal of spending 3% of GDP on R&D under the Open Coordination Method (discussion of the CREST Working Group’s final report on Internationalisation of R&D, discussion of the CREST Working Group’s final report on Policy Mix, possible topics for consideration under the new Open Coordination Method cycle, preparation of the mutual learning exercise based on the National Reform Programmes and the respective Progress Results to take place at the next CREST meeting) presentation and exchange of views on the report “Science Education NOW: A renewed Pedagogy for the Future of Europe” (Rocard Report), presentation of the final COST assessment report in the Framework Research Programme 6 (Monfret Panel) and an exchange of views on its recommendations on COST governance and this programmes role in the European Research Area.
The meeting shall continue with a presentation of Portugal’s S&T policies under the EU Presidency. Under this point, the head of the Portuguese delegation, Luis Magalhães, will give a presentation of the Commitment to Science for the Future of Portugal (text in Portuguese) initiative that was launched in March 2006.
The next CREST meeting, scheduled for 7th December 2007, will be discussed at the end.
