University of Texas at Austin logo The 2nd Seminar on Internationalisation and Technology Transfer, organised by UTEN – University Technology Enterprise Network was held on 30th March 2009 at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. It involved a dialogue with MIT experts on technology transfer and marketing, including discussions of Portuguese case studies.

The UTEN network was set up in the scope of the UT Austin – Portugal Program of the Partnerships for the Future action, which is part of the Commitment to Science for Portugal’s Future, which also includes the MIT – Portugal Program, the CMU – Portugal Program and the Fraunhofer – Portugal Program, all of which were invited to contribute to this seminar.

The programme of seminars is promoted by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), in partnership with the INPI – National Industrial Property Institute, IP, and included the discussion of topics related to university-enterprise linking, protecting and economically harnessing intellectual property and galvanising the setting-up of new science and technology-based enterprises, including participation from technology transfer and marketing departments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), University of Texas, Austin (UTAustin), University of Cambridge, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, CERN, and enterprises like General Electric (GE).

The UTEN Network links the main technology transfer departments in scientific and higher education institutions in Portugal, encouraging specialisation of national competences in this area through internationalisation. In addition to this series of seminars, the FCT has also opened a competition for internships in technology transfer and marketing in internationally-renowned institutions. UTEN also provides support for university-enterprise links, protecting and harnessing the economic potential of intellectual property and stimulating the internationalisation of new technology-based enterprises.

The UT Austin – Portugal Programme, of which the UTEN – University Technology Enterprise Network is part, is led by a Board of Directors chaired by the President of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), and including the President of Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), the Vice President for Research and the Associate Vice President for Research of the University of Texas at Austin and the two co-directors of the Programme, in Portugal and at the UT Austin.
