International Conferences/Meetings and other Initiatives Organised or Co-organised by UMIC:

2009

  • Portugal, 14-15 May, visit of Thierry Van der Pyl, Director of Components and Systems Research at the Directorate-General for the Information Society and Media at the European Commission (DGINFSO), who is responsible for part of the R&D nanotechnology support actions under the 7th Framework RDT Programme of the EU at UMIC’s invitation. Thierry van der Pyl was accompanied during the visit by Prof. Luis Melo, Coordinator of the Portuguese Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Network at the FCT. Over the two days, he visited 7 research units working in nanoscience and nanotechnology, located in Taipas, Guimarães, Porto, Aveiro and Lisbon, and held meetings at the beginning and end of the visit with the President of UMIC. The Director-General of the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) was also present at the first meeting, and the INL premises, which are under construction in Braga, were visited immediately after the meeting. The goal of the visit organised by UMIC and the FCT was to show the new Director of Components and Systems Research at DGINFSO a substantial part of the reality of nanoscience and nanotechnology research in Portugal and to create an opportunity for him to interact directly with an extended group of Portuguese researchers so as to foster mutual knowledge that may aid future contacts

2007 (includes the events organised under the Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council from July to December)

  • Braga, 20-21 November. High-Level Conference on Nanotechnology jointly organised by UMIC, the FCT, the Installing Committee of the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) and the Directorate-Generals for Research and the Information Society and Media at the European Commission in the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU. Ministers of Science from Portugal and Spain took part in this meeting, as did the Commissioners for Research and the Information Society and Media, heads of roughly 25 research laboratories from 10 countries and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) itself, as well as university researchers and managers from more than 15 companies working in the nanotechnology field, including major companies like ABB, Bosch, EADS, IBM, FIAT, Infineon, Philips, STMicroelectronics, Vaisala Group and Zeiss.
  • Braga, 19 November. Meetings of 9 committees and boards of different EU programmes, including the half-yearly meeting of the
    • EU National ICT Research Directors Forum,
    and meetings of 3 committees or boards of the European Technology Platform, namely:
    • Presidium of the ARTEMIS (Embedded Systems) European Technology Platform;
    • Nanomedicine European Technology Platform;
    • EPoSS (Smart Systems) European Technology Platform Steering Group.
    The other five meetings were:
    • Programming Committee for Theme 4 “Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies’ (NMP)" of the “Cooperation” Programme of the EU’s 7th Research Framework Programme;
    • Open workshop from the HEALTHY AIMS project on Health Applications to Demonstrate Micro-Nano-Bio Convergence;
    • Workshop on the HIPEAC – European Network of Excellence on High-Performance Embedded Architecture and Compilation’s Computation Systems;
    • European Microfluids Experts’ workshop from the NEXUS Association;
    • ICT Committee of the EU’s 7th Research Framework Programme.
    These meetings were jointly organised by: UMIC, the FCT, the Installing Committee of the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) and the Directorate-General for the Information Society and Media and the Directorate-General for Research, Technology and Development at the European Commission.
  • Oeiras, Lagoas Park Conference Centre, 15-16 November. Conference on RFID “The Next Step for the Internet of Things”, organised by UMIC with IAPMEI – Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation Support Institute and the company Link Consulting, in the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU. Representing UMIC were: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC, Pedro Ferreira, Voting Member of the Board of Directors, and Maria Jordão from UMIC.
  • Lisbon, Feira Internacional de Lisboa (Parque das Nações), 19-21 September. 4th Ministerial Conference on eGovernment on the topic “Reaping the benefits of eGovernment”, organised in the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU by AMA - Agency for Administrative Modernisation, IP, The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) and the Directorate-General for the Information Society and Media at the European Commission. Representing UMIC were: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC; Manuel Ricou and Graça Simões, Voting Members on UMIC’s Board of Directors.
  • Coimbra, 24-25 May. “11th Porvoo Group Conference”, organised by AMA and UMIC, with the presentation of the communication “Information and Knowledge Society Policies in Portugal”: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC.

  • Darmstadt, 28-31 May. "Innovation Week of the INI - GraphicsNet", including the organisation of an exhibition by UMIC on technological innovation, which involved different science and technology enterprises: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC.
  • Oeiras, INA, 8 February. "e-Government in Canada: Best Practices" Workshop. Keynote speaker: Christine Desloges, Director-General of the Canadian Government On-Line Initiative, organised by: UCMA – Administrative Modernisation Coordination Unit, INA – National Administration Institute and UMIC.

Conferences/Meetings Organised by Other Bodies in the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union (July – December 2007)

  • Lisbon, 29-30 October. Workshop on Technologies, Contents and Services for Social Inclusion: Facing the digital divide and the emergence of ambient assisted living, as part of the “Lisbon Research and Policy Workshops on. “Science, Technology and Social Change” organised during the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, which involved the UT Austin – Portugal Programme and participation from the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, where UMIC played a key role: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC, Pedro Ferreira, Voting Member of the Board of Directors.
  • Brussels, 25 October. 2nd Meeting of the EUROMED Forum on the Information Society opened with a speech by the President of UMIC, representing the Presidency of the Council of the EU: Luis Magalhães.
  • Brussels, 23-24 October. EU-MED Event on Research Infrastructures, including the national research and education networks (EUMEDCONNECT) and its links to the European GÉANT network, GRID Computing (EUMEDGRID) and other e-Infrastructures, which saw interventions by HRH Princess of Jordan Sumayya Bint Al Hassan, Dr. Najib Abdul Wahed, Deputy Minister of Higher Education for Scientific Research, Syria, Mr. Mashour Abudaka, Minister, Palestine, and, on behalf of the PortuguesePresidency of the EU, the President of UMIC: Luis Magalhães.
  • Brussels, 16-17 October. Launch of the 2nd wave of "Living Labs" projects event: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC.
  • Lisbon, 11-12 October. Open Workshop on e-Infrastructures of the e-Infrastructures Reflection Group (e-IRG), which included interventions on INGRID – the Portuguese National GRID Initiative planned by UMIC and the IBERGRID – Iberian Computation Grid Network cooperation plan which is coordinated on Portugal’s behalf by UMIC, different aspects related to data and security repositories in Grid computation networks, and prospects for the EGI – European Grid Initiative where Portugal is represented on the Policy Committee by UMIC and the LIP, GEANT3 and FEDERICA Next-Generation Networks , the EGEE – Enabling Grids for E-sciencE project and the PACE – Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe project, initiatives in which Portugal is participating through several institutions. Representing UMIC were: Pedro Ferreira, Voting Member of the UMIC Board of Directors, and Maria Jordão from UMIC.
  • Lisbon, 8-10 October. High Level Conference "The Future of Science and Technology in Europe", organised by the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, with support from the European Commission, with the objective of setting up a forum to debate the future of science and technology policy in Europe in depth. Over 400 of the main science and technology policy players in Europe took part. Together with the Director-General of Research at the European Commission, the President of UMIC co-chaired the summary session on the debate on the Green Paper "The European Research Area: New Perspectives”. Luis Magalhães.
  • Lisbon, 16-19 September. First World Conference on research integrity: fostering responsible research, organised by the European Science Foundation (ESF) and the US Office of Research Integrity (ORI) of the Department of Health and Human Services, USA. In Portugal, organising the event was aided by the support of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG). The President of UMIC co-chaired one of the sessions: Luis Magalhães.

  • Prague, 11-13 May. Conference on the Future of the Internet: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC and Ana Cristina Neves, Head of International Relations at UMIC.
  • Turin, 2-4 April. Conference on Broadband and the EU Recovery: Paulo Sim Sim, UMIC.
  • Brussels, 25-26 March. 1st Euro-Africa Cooperation Forum on ICT Research, organised by DG INFSO at the European Commission, with the support of the African Union Commission and the EuroAfrica-ICT project of the EU’s 7th Framework RDT Programme. The President of UMIC was one of the keynote speakers at the session following the official opening. A discussion panel was also organised on EU-Africa ICT cooperation: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC and Ana Cristina Neves, Head of International Relations at UMIC.
  • Lisbon, 17-18 January. High Level Workshop with the EUROHORCS – European Heads of Research Councils, co-organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and EUROHORCS: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC.

  • Lyon, 25-27 November. ICT 2008 Conference: Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC and Ana Cristina Neves, Head of International Relations at UMIC.
  • Lisbon, 6-8 November. European Public Health Association (EUPHA) Annual Meeting, organised by the Portuguese Association for the Promotion of Public Health (APPSP) on the topic “Health and Innovation in Europe”, with roughly 1,200 participants from a multitude of countries. Following the opening ceremony chaired by the Health Minister, the 1st Plenary Session was dedicated to the topic “Innovation, Knowledge and Citizens – Science, health promotion and disease prevention, and the citizen” and was opened with a guest intervention on the “Transfer of Scientific Knowledge to healthcare professionals and citizens” by the President of UMIC: Luis Magalhães.

  • Berlin, 24 April. High Level Event on ICT R&D and Globalisation in the scope of the German Presidency of the EU. Portugal participated a great deal at this event, including:
    • One of 4 plenary communications, “A national strategy for linking multinational cooperations to SMEs and regional excellence”, by Pedro Guedes de Oliveira (FEUP - Engineering Faculty of the Universidade do Porto and member of the Fraunhofer – Portugal Joint Steering Committee), focussing on Partnerships for the Future projects which have been launched between Portugal and MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Texas at Austin, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Harvard Medical School.
    • Co-coordination of one of the 3 parallel sessions: “Working Session 3 – National Research and Innovation Strategies in an International Context”, by Luis Magalhães, President of UMIC, in conjunction with Wolfgang Tostmann from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Sofie Nørager from the European Commission’s DG INFSO. One of the speakers at this session was a Portuguese who has been based in Germany for many years, José Luís Encarnação, founder and Director of GraphicsNet Stiftung, INIT-GraphicsNet Investitions Holding GmbH, INI.GraphicsNet Foundation.
