1st Brainstorm on Smart Energy

Logotype of the CMU – Carnegie Mellon UniversityOn the 15th June 2010, the 1st Brainstorm on Smart Energy (micro site) was held at the Scientific and Cultural Centre of Macau, Lisbon, organized jointly by the Carnegie Mellon – Portugal Program, the MIT – Portugal Program, and the projects INOVGRID and MOBI.E. The meeting was co-chaired by Marija Ilic, Carnegie Mellon University, and Luis Magalhães, President of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), had as Program Chair of the brainstorms, Inês Lima Azevedo (Carnegie Mellon University), as local organizers António Vidigal (EDP Innovation) and Luis Henriques (EDP Innovation), had the support of coordination of the Directors of the Carnegie Mellon – Portugal Program, José Moura (Carnegie Mellon University) and John Barros (IT / FEUP), and the Director of the MIT – Portugal Program, Paulo Ferrão (ISR Lisbon / IN + / IST).

The 1st Brainstorm on Smart Energy (micro site) joined researchers and directors/specialists of enterprises to identify the main areas of strategic research in the field of smart energy grids, for which research groups and enterprises can join forces with reference worldwide partners. The meeting was attended by researchers of the Associate Laboratories IT – Telecommunications Institute, INESC Porto – Institute of Systems and Computers Engineering of Porto and ISR Lisboa – Institute of Systems and Robotics of Lisbon, and of the M-ITI - Institute of Interactive Technologies of Madeira, the Center of Computer Science and Systems of Coimbra University and the Center for Innovation in Electrical Engineering and Energy of IST and directors/specialists from the enterprises EDP Innovation, Critical Software, C-Side, Efacec, Feedzai, ISA, Logica, Novabase and Tekever.

The Smart Energy Brainstorms aim to discuss R&D issues for the future of smart energy grids and for the development of pilot projects in this area in Portugal in a series of meetings from June to December 2010.

Portugal has set the ambitious target of reducing from 83% to 74% its energy dependence and increase the share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources to 60% up to 2020. As part of this challenge, the directors of the Carnegie Mellon – Portugal Program and the MIT – Portugal Program proposed the Smart Energy Brainstorms with the aim of identifying in a series of meetings from June to December 2010 the main areas of strategic R&D in the field of smart energy grids, in which Portuguese research groups and companies can join forces with key global partners to realize pilot projects of high international impact.

The Board of Directors of Carnegie Mellon – Portugal Program is chaired by the President of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), João Sentieiro, and also includes the President of the Carnegie Mellon University, Jared Cohon, the Dean of the School of Engineering of Carnegie Mellon University, Pradeep Koshla, the President of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães, Alfredo Baptista of Portugal Telecom and the Program Directors at Carnegie Mellon University and Portugal, José Barros Moura and João Barros.

The Governing Board of the MIT – Portugal Program is chaired by the President of FCT, João Sentieiro, and also includes the MIT Chancellor, Phillip Clay, the Dean of the MIT School of Engineering, Subra Suresh, the President of the  Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães, and the Program Directors at MIT and Portugal, respectively, Daniel Roos and  Paulo Ferrão.
