8th Meeting of the Board of Directors of the MIT-Portugal Program

Logo of MIT – Massachusetts Institute of TechnologyThe Board of Directors of the MIT-Portugal Program met on 29 March 2010, at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA., for the 8th time since this program was started around three and a half years ago, on 11 October 2006, under the framework of the Knowledge Networks activities, integrated within the Commitment to Science for Portugal’s Future initiative.

This Meeting of the Program Governing Committee of the MIT–Portugal Program was chaired by the President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães, representing the President of Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), João Sentieiro, who could not attend, and also included the Chancellor of MIT, Phillip Clay, the Dean of the School of Engineering atMIT, Subra Suresh, and the directors of the program at MIT and in Portugal, Daniel Roos and Paulo Ferrão, respectively. The meeting also included Karen Gleason, Associate Dean of Research Engineering.

The meeting was primarily aimed at discussing the 4th year progress report presented by the Program Directors, including a discussion on the 12 March 2010 Report from the Program Evaluation Committee, and to discuss the business plan and budget for the 5th year submitted by the Program Directors; analyse aspects of the selection and evaluation process of R&D projects from the 2009 Call for Proposals; analyse the selection of student applicants for 2010/2011 and the evolution verified in recent years, and preparatory aspects of a new MIT-Portugal Program.

The President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães, carried out a series of meetings from 29 to 31 March with:

  • Portuguese students from the Program who were at MIT;
  • Program Staff (Paulo Ferrão, Dan Roos, Josh Jacobs, Renee Robins, Sebastian Photenhauer)
  • Program Directors and the leaders of the EDAM/Product Design Area (Chris Magee, Joel Clark, Dan Roos, Paulo Ferrao)
  • Program Directors and the leaders of the Bioengineering Area (Dava Newman, Bruce Tidor, Dan Roos, Paulo Ferrao)
  • Program Directors and the leaders of the Transportation Area (Chris Zegrí, Paulo Ferrao)
  • Program Directors and the leaders of the Energy Area (Dave Marks, Stephen Connors, Dan Roos)
  • The individual responsible for the MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) (Steve Carson)
  • Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT (Subra Suresh)
  • Program Director at MIT (Dan Roos).

He also had working meetings on MIT cooperation with the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) at MIT, involving:

  • Director of MIT-INL Cooperation at MIT (Anantha Chandrakasan)
  • Co-director (Carl Thompson)
  • Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT (Subra Suresh)

He also had a meeting at Harvard Medical School (HMS) on the program component to make medical information and biomedical research from the HMS – Portugal Program available on the Internet, involving:

  • The Program Directors of the HMS-Portugal Program at HMS (Tony Komaroff and Tom Kirchausen).
