Logotype of the University of Texas at AustinThe Portuguese technology-based company YDreams decided to set up a new operations centre in the city of Austin, in the United States of America, to reinforce the UT Austin – Portugal Program, an agreement between the Portuguese State and the University of Texas at Austin which was signed in the last month, March, under the scope of the Knowledge Networks activities.

According to the company's CEO, António Câmara, the offices in Austin will be an excellent starting point for the consolidation of the company in the North American market. "Austin is the world capital of video games, American independent cinema and has a large concentration of technology companies".

The opening of YDreams in Austin was announced yesterday, July 11, 2007, in Lisbon at a ceremony that was attended by the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, the Vice President of the University of Texas, Juan Sanchez, and the Portuguese members of the Board of Directors of the UT Austin – Portugal Program, namely the President of Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), João Sentieiro, and the President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães.

The program of cooperation that the Portuguese government signed on 2 March with the University of Texas at Austin addresses the joint exploration of Emerging Technologies based on postgraduate teaching and research in the areas of digital content, advanced forms of computing and mathematics, as well as supporting the growth and development of technology-based enterprises. The setting up of YDreams in Austin in this way confirms the strategic interest of the UT Austin – Portugal Program and strengthens the intent expressed in the Commitment to Science for Portugal’s Future of the Government to support the growth of technology-based Portuguese companies through their internationalization.

The University of Texas at Austin is considered one of the largest public universities in the U.S. and includes one of the largest departments of the United States in the media area, and has one of the most advanced computing centres in the country, which has one of the largest supercomputers of the present day. It is also particularly well-known in the area of technology transfer and commercialization, particularly through its IC2 Institute – Innovation, Creativity and Capital Institute and the incubator of technology-based companies, ATI – Austin Technology Incubator.

YDreams, a Portuguese company that designs products and technology solutions, was set up in June 2000 by a group of researchers (António Câmara, Eduardo Dias, Edmundo Nobre, José Miguel Remédio and Nuno Correia), from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, of the New University of Lisbon (for more information see New Technology Enterprises).
