IBM Science Prize 2008

The 2008 IBM Science Prize (text in Portuguese) awards ceremony took place on 22 July 2009 in the Salão Nobre room of the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, at a ceremony chaired by the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, José Mariano Gago. The ceremony was also attended by the President of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), João Sentieiro, and the President of The Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), Luis Magalhães.

The 2008 IBM Science Prize was awarded to Marko Beko for his work "Non-coherent Communications in MIMO Systems: Receiver Design and Code Construction”, his PhD work conducted at the Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica de Lisboa under the guidance of Professors João Xavier and Victor Barroso. The winner, originally from Serbia, came to Portugal in 2000 for his PhD and has since become a Portuguese citizen.

Two honourable mentions were also given to Marco Paulo Lages Parente for his work "Biomechanic Study of damage to the pelvic floor during a vaginal birth", and to Miguel Ângelo da Silva Jorge for his work "Molecular Simulation of Nanoporous Silica Synthesis”.
