Initiation Project for the Curriculum of the Upper Primary School

Digital capacity building is more and more a need, which shall have an effect on the professional world and daily life. According to data from the European Commission, Europe will generate approximately 900 thousand vacant positions in ICT - two million vacant positions if we include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths - in 2020. These will be left vacant unless ICT labour adjustments are made.

Considering these needs, the Directorate General for Education is challenging the public schools in the mainland of Portugal to be the first to teach programming to their small 3rd and 4th year students beginning in the next school year.

The groups taking part may indicate up to three teachers to take part in the training to be promoted by the Directorate General for Education. Training will take place under the e-learning system throughout June and July. Schools will also have access to an online, support and monitoring system through a community on the initiative’s website.
