Margarida M.J. Quina was born in Bragança in 1969, graduated on Chemical Engineering (BSc) in 1992, and gets his Master degree (MSc) in 1997. The PhD degree was obtained in 2006, with a thesis entitled “Processos de Inertização e Valorização de Cinzas Volantes – Incineração de Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos”, from the University of Coimbra. Her professional activity as teacher started in 1993, and at the moment she is Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra. The scientific activity is mostly done as researcher of the Group on Environment, Reaction and Separation Engineering - GERSE, of the Research Centre "Engenharia dos Processos Químicos e dos Produtos da Floresta- CIEPQPF", Chemical Engineering Department, University of Coimbra. In the environmental area, the characterization (physical and chemical), treatment (solidification/stabilisation) and valorization (ceramic materials) of solid residues have been considered. The research addresses in particular the analysis of leaching processes of heavy metals and mathematical modelling. Regarding the separation area, some studies are ongoing on aiming the recovery of heavy metals (mainly chromium) from wastewaters, through membrane and ion-exchange processes. Concerning chemical reaction engineering, the research focus mainly on the computational simulation of catalytic bed reactors, taking into account the heterogeneous nature of the system.
