"Drug delivery systems: Advanced technologies potentially applicable in personalized treatments", The EPMA Journal 1, 1: 164 - 209. Advanced drug delivery systems (DDS) present indubitable benefits for drug administration. Over the past three decades, new
approaches have been suggested for the development of novel carriers for drug delivery. In this review, we describe general
concepts and emerging research in this field based on multidisciplinary approaches aimed at creating personalized treatment
for a broad range of highly prevalent diseases (e.g., cancer and diabetes). This review is composed of two parts. The first
part provides an overview on currently available drug delivery technologies including a brief history on the development of
these systems and some of the research strategies applied. The second part provides information about the most advanced drug
delivery devices using stimuliresponsive polymers. Their synthesis using controlled-living radical polymerization strategy
is described. In a near future it is predictable the appearance of new effective tailor-made DDS, resulting from knowledge
of different interdisciplinary sciences, in a perspective of creating personalized medical solutions.

"Modification of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-co-Poly (3-hydroxyvalerate) with Natural Rubber", Journal of Applied Polymer Science 116, 2: 718 - 726. Composites of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)-copoly( 3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) with 6% of 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV) and natural rubber
(NR) were prepared by a solvent-casting method. Different approaches were tested for the composite preparation. Both PHBHV
and NR were dissolved in chloroform, followed by its evaporation, giving various layers. The mechanical properties and morphology
of the obtained composites were evaluated by tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The obtained
results demonstrated that the final composite has excellent mechanical properties when compared with PHBHV. SEM analysis unequivocally
showed the excellent adhesion between the two polymeric layers. This new material was also tested as a drug delivering system
using flurbiprofen as a model drug, and then the diffusion coefficients were determined. This article describes an easy method
to produce a desirable composite from PHBHV and NR.

Catalyzed by Na2S2O4 in Water", Journal of Polymer Science: Part A: Polymer Chemistry 47, 17: 4454 - 4463. Living radical polymerization of 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) was achieved by single-electron-transfer/degenerative transfer
mediated living radical polymerization (SET-DTLRP) in water catalyzed by sodium dithionate. The poly(2- methoxyethyl acrylate)
is an amphiphilic polymer with a hydrophobic part (polyethylene chain) and a mildly hydrophilic tail. The plots of number-average
molecular weight versus conversion and ln{[M]0/[M]} versus time are linear, indicating a controlled polymerization. This method
leads to the preparation of a,x-di(iodo) poly(2- methoxyethyl acrylate)s (a,x-di(iodo)PMEA) macroinitiators that can be further
functionalized. The molecular weight distributions were determined using a combination of three detectors (TriSEC): right-angle
light scattering (RALLS), a differential viscometer (DV) and refractive index (RI). The method studied in this work represents
a possible route to prepare well-tailored macromolecules made of 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (biocompatible material) in an environmentally
friendly reaction medium. To the best of our knowledge there is no previous report dealing with the synthesis of PMEA by any
LRP approach in aqueous medium. .
