information about performance and to play an important role as a complementary tool to physical experiments. Indeed, this methodology has produced significant improvements in equipment design and technique prescription in different sports (Kellar et al., 1999; Pallis et al., 2000; Dabnichki & Avital, 2006). In swimming, this methodology has been applied in order to better understand swimming performance. Thus, the numerical techniques have been addressed to study the propulsive forces generated by the propelling segments (Rouboa et al., 2006; Marinho et al., 2009a) and the hydrodynamic drag forces resisting forward motion (Silva et al., 2008; Marinho et al., 2009b). Although the swimmer’s performance is dependent on both drag and propulsive forces, within this chapter the focus is only on the analysis of the propulsive forces. Hence, this chapter covers topics in swimming propelling force analysis from a numerical simulation technique perspective. This perspective means emphasis on the fluid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics methodology applied in swimming investigations. One of the main aims for performance (velocity) enhancement of swimming is to maximize propelling forces whilst not increasing drag forces resisting forward motion, for a given trust. This chapter will concentrate on numerical simulation results, considering the scientific simulation point-of-view, for this practical application in swimming.

Purpose – The purpose of this current study is to identify the optimal stable position of airship, with reference to spatial variation of atmospheric wind flow, so as to reduce the vibrations and thus aid in the development of control mechanism of airship dynamics. Design/methodology/approach – Study of uniform flow under steady-state conditions was carried out through the measurements of pressure and velocity in a wind tunnel at low Mach numbers on airship model (in order of size, 1:13) inclined to the uniform air stream at various angles. The measurements have been made for a range of angles of incidence, in both vertical and horizontal planes, with a Reynolds number, based on the free stream velocity and a body cross-sectional dimension, of order of four and six, respectively. Steady-state numerical simulations were performed, serving comparative investigation with experimental data for the specific case of the model inclined to the free stream, with orientation of side-slip (yaw) angle ß=0 and angle of attack (pitch) a=0. Findings – The numerical results showed similar trend as found by experimental analysis. In this study, several factors such as the pressure (Cp), lift (CL), drag (CD) coefficients, pressure and air velocity were taken into account for comparative analysis. The analysis paved the way in identification of constructively stable position of airship model with orientation of ß=0 and a=0, with respect to air flow direction. Practical implications – The current findings aid in the development of control mechanism of airship dynamics. Originality/value – The experimental analysis of the airship model is presented along with computational fluid dynamics analysis of optimised shape of airship model in different orientations with respect to direction of airflow.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of wearing a cap on swimmer passive drag. A computational fluid dynamics analysis was carried-out to determine the hydrodynamic drag of a female swimmer’s model: (i) wearing a swimming cap and; (ii) with no cap. The three-dimensional surface geometry of a female swimmer’s model with cap and with no cap was acquired through standard commercial laser scanner. Passive drag force and drag coefficient were computed with the swimmer in a streamlined position. Higher hydrodynamic drag values were determined when the swimmer was with no cap in comparison with the situation when the swimmer was wearing a cap. In conclusion, one can state that wearing a swim cap may positively influence swimmer’s hydrodynamics.

"Comparing Computational Fluid Dynamics And Inverse Dynamics Methodologies To Assess Passive Drag During Swimming Gliding", Portuguese Journal of Sport Sciences 11, 2: 187 - 189.
The purpose of the present study was to compare two different methodologies for passive drag evaluation considering two different swimming glide positions used in the breaststroke event: a prone position with flexed shoulders and arms extended above the head, and a prone position with arms extended along the trunk. Experimentally the passive drag was assessed by Inverse Dynamics from swim meter data, and numerical simulation by the Computational Fluid Dynamics. Similar drag and drag coefficient values were found for the first glide position with the two methods; however, for the second glide position, the drag and drag coefficients were higher using Computational Fluid Dynamic when compared with Inverse Dynamics for the same velocities.

"Heat deposition in thick targets due to interaction of high energy protons and thermal hydraulics analysis", Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms 266, 4: 604 - 612.
Heat deposition inside thick targets due to interaction of high energy protons (Ep ~ GeV) has been estimated using an improved version of the Monte Carlo simulation code CASCADE.04.h. The results are compared with the available experimental data for thick targets of Be, Al, Fe, Cu, Pb and Bi at proton energies of 0.8 GeV, 1.0 GeV and 1.2 GeV. A more continuous heat deposition approach which has been adopted in CASCADE.04.h yields results which are in better agreement with the experimental data as compared to the ones from the earlier version of CASCADE.04. The results are also compared with the predictions of the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. Both CASCADE.04.h and FLUKA predictions are nearly similar for heavy targets and both agree with the experimental measurements. However, they do have differences in predictions for lighter targets where measurements also differ from the predictions. It is observed that the maximum heat loss in thick targets occurs at the beginning of the target due to increasing nuclear reaction contributions. This aspect is crucial in designing the window of a spallation neutron target employed in an accelerator driven sub-critical system (ADS) as this is the first material to be traversed by the proton beam and is subjected to the maximum temperature gradient. Optimization of the target-window parameters requires a careful estimation of heat deposition in the window region and this has been demonstrated through thermal hydraulic studies related to the design of a realistic lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) spallation neutron target for an ADS system.

BARC has recently proposed a one-way coupled ADS reactor. This reactor requires typically ~1 GeV proton beam with 2 mA of current. Approximately 8 kW of heat is deposited in the window of the target. Circulating liquid metal target (lead/lead-bismuth{eutectic) has to extract this heat and this is a critical R&D problem to be solved. At present there are very few accelerators, which can give few mA and high-energy proton beam. However, accelerators with low energy and hundreds of micro-ampere current are commercially available. In view of this, it is proposed in this paper to simulate beam window heating of ~8 kW in the target with low-energy proton beam. Detailed thermal analysis in the spallation and window region has been carried out to study the capability of heat extraction by circulating LBE for a typical target loop with a proton beam of 30 MeV energy and current of 0.267 mA. The heat deposition study is carried out using FLUKA code and flow analysis by CFD code. The detailed analysis of this work is presented in this paper. .

"Intense heat simulation studies on window of high density liquid metal spallation target module for accelerator driven systems", International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer 49, 19-20: 3728 - 3745.
The design of the spallation target system for accelerator driven systems requires a detailed understanding of the thermal-hydraulic issues involved as intense heat is deposited both in the window as well as in the target. Removal of heat from the window is a big thermal-hydraulic challenge. A lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) experimental flow loop is currently being designed (1:1 size of an actual target both in terms of geometry and flow rate) to study thermal-hydraulics of the target system. It is proposed to simulate the proton beam heating of the window with a plasma heat source. In this paper, flow simulation studies have been performed for different target geometries and flow configurations with different window materials, which are proposed for the above said experimental loop. Optimal values of window geometry and flow configurations including the thermal loads the window experiences have been arrived at along with the required parameters for the plasma torch. The plasma torch has been tested and found to be suitable for simulation of proton beam heating in LBE loop to be set up.
