After finishing high school from Avelar Brotero school in 1998, António Pedro undertook the Civil Engineering course in Coimbra University where he graduated in the area of Geotechnics in 2003 with 16 (out of 20). He remained in Coimbra University for his Masters in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, concluded in 2007, where he researched into the excavation of shallows tunnels in soft rocks, which involved a numerical back analysis study and the geomechanical characterization of rock masses. From Coimbra he went to Imperial College of London in 2009 where he started his PhD in the Geotechnics section on the excavation of shafts and its interaction with the surrounding structures. His research involved an extensive in-situ and laboratory characterization, the calibration of soil models using optimization tools such as genetic algorithms and the 2D and 3D numerical modelling using the in-house finite element program. Since 2002 António Pedro has been linked with the Geotechnical section of the University of Coimbra. First, as a monitor, involved into consultancy activities and in laboratory demonstrations for the undergrads. In 2004 he became assistant lecturer-in-training and since 2007 he is an assistant lecturer of the University of Coimbra. Through these years he has been teaching subjects such as Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics and Excavation and Retaining Works. António Pedro was also the representative of the assistant lecturers in the Pedagogic Committee of the Integrated Master Degree in Civil Engineering in 2008. António Pedro has participated in several research programmes, such as MIT-Portugal, where he worked on risk analysis associated to the construction of high speed train lines and on the characterization of sands submitted to dynamic loads. His research work as also been concerned with the numerical modelling of underground structures, the prediction of ground movements around deep excavations and the design of retaining structures of various types. Most recently his research is also focused on the development of optimization tools using genetic algorithms and hill climbing technique in order to calibrate advanced soil constitutive models. He also contributed to the development of several geotechnical educational programs. António Pedro has been author and co-author of more than 15 technical publications that were published, and most of them orally presented, in national and international geotechnical conferences. António Pedro has also advised several geotechnical companies in different and important projects, such as the rehabilitation of the Rossio tunnel in Lisbon and of the Tornada tunnel in Caldas-da-Rainha, the Socorridos pumping station in Madeira, the Mato Forte tunnel in Lisbon, the Trofa tunnel in Trofa, the Zaouit Ait Mellal tunnel in Morocco and the Ivens shaft in Lisbon.
