Sustic, Sandra. 2013. "Matching colours in pictorial retouching: influence of the three colour dimensions and colour distortion phenomena.", ECR - estudos de conservação e restauro, 4: 14 - 28. Abstract
Our visual perception is strongly influenced by the anatomical structure of the eye and by
lighting conditions. While looking at the painting, we perceive existing colour attributes,
using retinal photoreceptors – cones – that serve our vision at higher luminance levels.
Lighting, on the other hand, affects our colour discrimination as well as our perception of
three dimensions of colour.
During the retouching process our visual system can be affected by multiple optical impressions
that many painting conservators are not fully aware of. Colour distortion phenomena can
impact our observation stealthily, while producing simultaneous contrasts and afterimages
that interfere with our colour discrimination as well as our decisions in pigment mixing.
The aim of this paper is to analyse these optical properties and to provide practical guide-lines that will minimize colour
distortion. One of the proposals is the use of 18% reflective
grey card to cover adjacent colours around the paint loss. This method can be adopted as
a helpful implement for tuning our colour perception.

Bailão, Ana M. S; Sustic, Sandra. 2012. "Brushes for Retouching: How to Choose Them", e_conservation magazine, 24: 136 - 147. Many painting conservators are often convinced that they are unable to obtain adequate retouching
results due to their technique, when in reality their failure is the consequence of a poor choice of
brushes. It has been obser ved that choosing the r ight brush is very impor tant in order to fulf il all quality
aspects that should be taken into consideration when planning a retouching project. This paper
endeavours to provide comprehensive information about the history , examination and evaluation of
brushes. It is aimed at all conser vators who purchase brushes for retouching practice, with the objective
to determine which are the best ones currently on the market. This study demonstrates that the shape
and size of the brush must fully correspond to the technique and method of retouching, in order to
obtain optimal results. The article is written by two investigators from dif ferent countries, Portugal and
Croatia, who share their own personal retouching practices.

Bailão, Ana M. S. 2012. "Colour discrimination in conservation students: the Farnsworth-Munsell 100– hue test", Ge-conservación, 3: 105 - 116. The matching colour in retouching depends on the ability of the observer to differentiate colour. This ability was measured
on 28 volunteer conservation students of varying aged using a specific test of colour discrimination – the Farnsworth-Munsell
100-hue test. Fourteen of the subjects were aged between 18-28, six between 29-38, seven between 39-48, and one was over 49
years. The final results are: 50% of subjects showed a wide-ranging ability to differentiate colour: none of them was colour
blind; 7% of the students, however, have low ability to discriminate hues but only one was aware of his deficiency. The author
aims to reveal the importance of this test for the conservators, using it as a detector to select eligible subjects with high
sensibility in colour discrimination, which is an essential predisposition to perform accurate colour matching in retouching.

"Application of a Methodology for Retouching. A Case Study of a Contemporary Painting", CeROArt, 6: 2 - 10. When the research on retouching commenced in 2006, it was found to be a complex topic.
Most Portuguese conservators, whether they have very little or a lot of experience did not seem
comfortable to talk about the subject, not only about the techniques used but also about the
materials and procedures. The information available on retouching is descriptive, revealing
just the selected retouching technique and some notes about materials. Few professionals
justify their choices in retouching procedures, unlike common for other treatment steps such
as the cleaning of surfaces. This article aims at describing the methodology of retouching in
detail, listing the chosen materials and the reasons that led to the choices made in regards to
materials and technique.
2 The selection of the technique and choice of colours are related to the formal and chromatic
study of the artwork. That is, the analysis of the disturbance caused by paint loss, the hue of
the original and the general condition of the painting. Factors such as texture, the interaction
of light with matter, the stability of pigments and binders and the refraction indices were
considered. All these factors were simultaneously evaluated according to the situations, with
the single purpose to increase the durability of the retouching.

"Application of spatial analysis operations for the characterization of wood painting features", Trabalho apresentado em COST Action IE0601- Evaluation of Deterioration and Management of Change, In Wood Science for Conservation of Cultural Heritage, Hamburgo. This paper explores the use of spatial analysis functions and geographic information systems (GIS) on the characterization
of wood painting features. The study evaluates the performance of neighbourhood functions and maximum likelihood classification
of ancient wood painting pathologies and construction techniques. The paper demonstrates in four case studies the added
value of GIS spatial analysis functions in the documenting process of wood pieces.
