"Evaluation of errors on the CFD computation of air flow and heat transfer around the human body", Building and Environment 58, Dec 2012: 58 - 69. Abstract A detailed computer aided design model representing a female human body was created from a 3-D scan of a full scale thermal manikin. The sensible heat losses due to convection and radiation for a person seated in a rectangular room were calculated using CFD simulations, as well as the parameters characterizing the flow around the body including air velocity and temperature. The accuracy of numerical results was evaluated in terms of the physical approximation errors, namely inlet boundary conditions and turbulence models, and spatial discretization errors due to the number of grid elements and grid refinement near solid surfaces. Results were compared to published data from two tests performed in conditions that portrayed the CFD simulations. The use of: a mixed turbulence model between k–¿, for zones away from solid surfaces, and k-¿, for zones close to solid surfaces; values of the dimensionless y+ parameter inferior to 5 jointly with a low-Reynolds method to model the flow in the near-wall region of the human surface and inlet non-uniform boundary profiles for temperature, velocity and turbulence intensity, leaded to good agreement with experimental results, with a global mean relative error of the order of 7%, with a standard deviation of 4%, in terms of convective and radiative heat flux between the human body and the thermal environment. .

Abstract Calibration and measurement procedures implemented to work with a seven-hole directional pressure probe in the mapping of pressure and velocity wind tunnel flows are reported in this paper. The performances of two different methods used to derive the flow characteristics (direction and magnitude of flow velocity vector and total and dynamic pressure) from the seven pressure values measured by the probe, are comparatively evaluated. The conventional method, based upon the fitting of the calibration directional data with fourth order polynomial functions is compared with a new method where direct linear interpolation is performed over the calibration matrices. Besides the comparison of the two methods, the fundamentals of the working procedure of the probe are briefly explained and an example of the mapping of the flow field around a car model in a wind tunnel experiment is presented.

Abstract In this paper the first results of a project, initiated in the University of Coimbra and dealing with the conjugated influence of multiple stressors in riding passengers, are presented. A field study was conducted in public transportation buses, in which the subjective response of the occupants was collected and the physical parameters related to thermal comfort, air quality, vibration and noise were acquired.

"A Computational Model to Simulate the Thermal Behaviour of the Passengers Compartment of Vehicles", SAE 1999 Transactions - Journal of Passenger Cars, 1999: 0 - 1. In this paper a computational model developed with the objective of simulating the thermal behaviour of the passengers' compartment of vehicles is presented. The model is based on the space-integral energy balance equations for the air inside the compartment and for the main vehicle bodies and surfaces. It can solve two kinds of problems. In the first one, calculates the heat stress that the air conditioning or heating system must equilibrate, in order to satisfy predefined permanent regimen project specifications. In the second one, once imposed a particular air conditioning system and given the ambient conditions, it computes the different temperatures and heat fluxes either in transient or steady regimens.

Abstract The indoor air quality in the passenger compartment of an intercity bus is studied. A system used for the remotion of the contaminants from the compartment, based on an extraction duct, was projected using a simple, unidimensional flow model with capability to predict the air exchange rate as a function of the vehicle velocity. Some tests using tracer gan methods were performed in a real vehicle with the contaminant remotion system mounted, in order to validate the calculation model and evaluate the performances of the system. A good agreement between the predicted and the experimental results was verified and the obtained air exchange rate was quite reasonable when compared with the former situation, without extraction duct. .
