Master in Nursing Family Health
Course presentation
The Master of Science in Family Health Nursing complements the training offered at the School of Health of Leiria (ESSLei) , in the science of nursing. The EssLei is a higher education institution which carries out activities in education, training, research and service to the community, governed by quality standards that ensure an adequate response to the needs of the region in which it operates.
This study plan is built in response to sustained demand for the need for training and updating of nursing graduates. This offer has been created in order to respond to the need felt by nursing professionals in search of expertise in the area of Family Health Nursing, which to date has relied on institutions outside their area of residence, with the resulting adverse economic, professional and personal implications.
The Master comprehends four semesters and is structured as follows: the first semester includes seven courses totaling 30 credits, the second semester is composed by two courses) and 30 credits, (students can choose one course among two options offered), the 3rd and 4th semesters are devoted to a project/dissertation in the area of the study plan, which sums 1620 hours, and a total of 60 credits. The final training is of professional nature and includes the elaboration of a final report. The project/dissertation is also subject of a final report.
Goals
a) To develop a systemic view of the family functioning, perceiving it as a process of co-evolution between transformative systems and contexts;
b) To understand the theoretical foundations and frameworks of Family Nursing;
c) To acquire knowledge that may enhance the ability in decision making, in the process of assessment and family intervention;
d) To equate the contributions of the Model Family Assessment and Intervention in the development of practices of Family Health Nursing;
e) To provide specific care, at the different stages of the family life cycle, at the level of primary, secondary and tertiary care;
f) To play the role of an expert in the health care team, in the area of Family Health Nursing;
g) To promote the ability to make ethical decisions;
h) To encourage innovation and processes of changing, under the light of scientific knowledge and research;
i) To promote the construction and dissemination of knowledge in the area of Family Health Nursing.

Conditions of admission
Entry Requirements
- Holders of a degree or legal equivalent in Nursing;
- Holders of a foreign academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a State acceding to this process in nursing.
