Abstract: Due to the growing motivation of countries to use renewable energy, instead of fossil fuels, for the production
of electricity, the number of solar power plants had an increase in recent times. The sun as a renewable source is used by
the Concentrated Solar Power systems (CSP) to achieve this goal. This process results in a considerable amount of concentrated
solar radiation (visible light, infrared and ultraviolet radiation) inside and in the neighborhood of the installations. Some
previous studies have addressed the possible risks for health of workers in environments where they perform activities in
outdoors exposed to solar radiation. The overall purpose of this paper is to provide information about the environmental conditions
in facilities using CSP technology, the effects of solar radiation in humans and the methods for the risk assessment in this
type of facilities. Several standards including elements applicable to the field of occupational health in the central receiver
area of solar power plants are also referred. .

estimating risks to human health (Master thesis), 2012. Abstract: Solar thermal plants have increased their number and power generation potential, because of the increasing motivation
of countries to use renewable energy for electricity production, as well as the constant increase of fossil fuel and environmental
consciousness. Every solar plant has mirrors that concentrate sunlight at one point called receiver, so the presence of concentrated
sunlight in huge amounts are usual in this kind of facilities. Due to this concentrated radiation, many risks may exist, like
skin or retinal burns and glare or post image effect. Some previous studies have provided Threshold Limit Values (TLV’s)
for exposure to this type of concentrated solar radiation, as well as discussed the potential impact of this exposure. The
need for risk assessment in these plants increases every day, in order to guarantee a healthy and safe working environment.
This investigation aims to estimate ocular risks on an installation dedicated to solar energy and provide a representative
analysis showing the current status of the system and subsequently, propose security measures to counter potential risks.
The facility in which the study took place, is called “Campo de Prueba de Helióstatos (CPH)”, and it is operated by the Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México and the Universidad de Sonora, in Hermosillo, Mexico. Assessment of potential risks, brightness
and glare caused by the heliostat surfaces, was performed according to the methodology proposed in recent research. Reflected
radiation levels that were obtained in this study were compared with the maximum permissible limits set out in previous studies.
Various institutions, associations and regulations are dedicated to the development of security measures and TLV’s. These
regulations went analyzed and recommendations went elaborated about the needs of this kind of industries. .
