Abstract We apply a linear regression mixed effects model to explore the influence of landscape factors on nitrate-N concentrations in a coastal watershed of Portugal. Landscape composition and configuration metrics, together with variables assessing the physical characteristics of the study area, were used. The analysis was performed using seasonal data from the years 2001 and 2006. The seasonal influence was included as a random effect to account for temporal correlations. Together, the fixed and the random factors explain 78% of the variance, whereas the fixed factors alone explain 10%. Urban, slope, elevation and aggregation index of urban class contribute to the differences found in the NO3--N concentrations. Urban has the weakest effect, whereas slope and elevation show a conditioned negative effect on nitrate-N. The effect of slope gets stronger for higher standard deviations of elevation and the effect of the standard deviation of elevation, measuring the variation of elevation within a sub-watershed, gets stronger for steeper slopes. Of the configuration class level metrics included in the analysis, only aggregation index of urban played a significant role in the final model, and it revealed to be related to urban percentage. The influence of landscape configuration metrics, though observed by others, was not obvious in this study. Future analysis evaluating the effect of metrics selection could be performed.

"Systematic processes of land use/land cover change to identify relevant driving forces: Implications on water quality", Science of The Total Environment 470471, 0: 1320 - 1335. Abstract Land use and land cover (LULC) are driving forces that potentially exert pressures on water bodies, which are most commonly quantified by simply obtained aggregated data. However, this is insufficient to detect the drivers that arise from the landscape change itself. To achieve this objective one must distinguish between random and systematic transitions and identify the transitions that show strong signals of change, since these will make it possible to identify the transitions that have evolved due to population growth, industrial expansion and/or changes in land management policies. Our goal is to describe a method to characterize driving forces both from LULC and dominant LULC changes, recognizing that the presence of certain LULC classes as well as the processes of transition to other uses are both sources of stress with potential effects on the condition of water bodies. This paper first quantifies the driving forces from LULC and also from processes of LULC change for three nested regions within the Mondego river basin in 1990, 2000 and 2006. It then discusses the implications for the environmental water body condition and management policies. The fingerprint left on the landscape by some of the dominant changes found, such as urbanization and industrial expansion, is, as expected, low due to their proportion in the geographic regions under study, yet their magnitude of change and consistency reveal strong signals of change regarding the pressures acting in the system. Assessing dominant LULC changes is vital for a comprehensive study of driving forces with potential impacts on water condition.

"The European Marine Strategy: Contribution and challenges from a Portuguese perspective", Marine Policy 36, 5: 963 - 968. Abstract The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is considered to be the environmental pillar of the EU Integrated Maritime Policy, establishing a framework within which member states must take the necessary measures to achieve, or maintain, good environmental status in their marine waters. This study presents Portugal's contributions to the Directive development, describes the Portuguese institutional framework within the MSFD and, finally, highlights the opportunities and threats to the success of the MSFD implementation in Portugal. The latter entails an analysis of the Directive's long term adequacy in its link to (1) marine spatial planning, (2) climate change and (3) the economic/financial crisis. With one of Europe's largest exclusive economic zones. Portugal's interest in the MSFD is paramount. Efforts towards the approval of the final document were assured during the Portuguese presidency of the European Council of Ministers, in 2007, while chairing a thorough discussion between the Council and the European Parliament. In the Portuguese context, the Directive implementation will rely on the Water Institute as the authoritative entity, which will be responsible for coordinating all necessary efforts at the national level. The success of such process depends on a close cooperation among the institutions involved as well as on how approved measures account for long term issues. In addition, the MSFD implementation must be built on lessons learned within the Water Framework Directive, in order to be successful. Although it poses a methodological challenge to Portugal, the MSFD implementation is expected to contribute significantly to the improvement of coastal/marine conservation and management at the national level.

Abstract: During the past decades, the Mondego estuary has been studied systematically regarding the ecology of animal and plant communities (Veríssimo et al. 2012; Vinagre et al. 2015), water quality status (Teixeira et al. 2009), biogeochemical cycles (Martins et al. 2002) or the effects of stressors (pollutants and others) on the structure and function of the system (Martins et al. 2007). More recently, other studies have described and quantified relationships between the anthropogenic uses of the river basin with the water quality within the estuary (Teixeira and Marques, 2016), the physiological stress of bivalve populations (Gonçalves et al. 2016) and the nitrogen signatures of animal populations from adjacent sandy beaches (Bessa et al. in prep.). In this work we compiled information from consistent long-term data basis coupled to traditional (taxonomically-based) and novel-approaches (biomarkers, biological traits analysis and trend analysis) and newer tools (modelling, GIS, isotopic analyses) to show that temporal variations on the structure and function of macrobenthic communities from the Mondego estuary are related with upstream agricultural practices and land cover changes. Subsequently, we also present evidence for relationships between temporal and seasonal variations on estuarine biogeochemical cycles, nutrient dynamics of adjacent coastal areas and the nitrogen enrichment of macroinvertebrate populations from nearby sandy beaches. We hypothesize that links between river basin use, the structure and function of estuaries and nutrient dynamics of the adjacent coastal areas are strongly entangled and, thus, should be taken into account for achieving sustainable coastal management.
