Abstract Statistical graphs, measures of central tendency and measures of spread are key concepts in the statistics curriculum, so we present here a dynamic method (software) that may be used in the classroom. In this work we begin with an introductory approach. This is done to emphasize the importance of stimulating the visualization of statistical measures by using available technology as a means of overcoming difficulties and errors related to interpretations and also to motivate students in the classroom.

Educational policies keep stressing the importance of critical thinking skills for promotion of academic success in Higher Education, to facilitate transition into the labour market and to foster livelong learning. Curricula in Higher Education Institutions gradually meet this necessity, integrating strategies foreseeing the development of critical thought in students. However, at this level, we still commonly found teaching and learning strategies emphasizing a more or less passive knowledge transfer, focusing on the student’s ability to memorize information. Peer review and feedback, allied to cooperative work, are important components of active learning and development of critical thinking skills process. It is therefore important to understand the role and influence of feedback provision in peer review activities between cooperative groups. This study analyses the perceptions and attitudes of 27 students in two Masters Courses on the feedback given in peer review activities (between groups), based on their responses to a survey. Results showed, among other aspects, that collaborative work and feedback exchange between groups fostered the contact with different perspectives towards the same situation, and that its critical analysis allowed the students to enhance different skills, the most referred one being the critical thinking.

Among today's attributes required to engineers is creativity. From the creativity domain, this work focused in mathematical creativity, since we teach students in Mathematics courses. This paper presents the study of 61 students' understanding of mathematical creativity of four engineering degrees that were in first year of a northeastern Portuguese university and we analyzed their texts to an open question in a Google Drive Form: "What do you understand by mathematical creativity?" Data collection was done in the first semester of 2014/2015 in the Linear Algebra course. The content analysis of students' answers focused on their texts led to three main categories that were crossed with students' gender, age, degree, and their liking for Mathematics. The results showed that "problem solving" category had the majority of the references, and there were no differences between the proportions of the categories by gender, age or liking mathematics or even independency. This exploratory study leaves clues about the connection that needs to be made between mathematical creativity and solving problems, in order to foster it in Mathematics courses in engineering degrees.

Probabilities, conditional probabilities, total probability theorem, and Bayes' formula are contents of higher education Probability and Statistics courses in Engineering degrees. Students' difficulties in learning these probability concepts were already discussed in previous researches. In this work, we present an attempt to use a reference matrix to analyze students' representations in a probability problem. In what concerns the results to our first analysis, when considering only the students with correct or partially correct answers, they revealed a better performance in the written language representation. Among students with a better overall performance in the correct and partially correct answers, the worst results were the answers with the symbolic representation. The tests analysis needs additional development including the wrong cases and the reference matrix of analysis needs further improvement so that in future students may overcome their difficulties in learning these concepts.

The definition of creativity is not simple, because there are different conceptions, which are also in constant changing. This paper presents a study on the conceptions of creativity in students of the first year of university, in the engineering area. This study considered the answers of 67 undergraduates originating from four different courses to an open question available online on Google Drive - "What is creativity?". Data were collected in the first semester of the 2014/2015 among students at a Portuguese university in the Linear Algebra program. The analysis of the students' answers focused on the content analysis using the categories of Vernon's definition of creativity; we considered the variables gender and undergraduate courses into the analysis. The results show that gender and the undergraduate courses were independent from the analyzed group categories. However, the descriptive analysis by gender showed that the predominant group was the implicit group category (using the terms creation, imagination, and originality) while in the undergraduate course it prevailed the explicit group category (using the terms inventions, innovations and thinking). This exploratory study leaves clues on the approach to other definitions and constructs of creativity, as well as their implementation for teaching in higher education.
