Ecological impacts of ocean acidification on marine biodiversity: moving beyond single species to assemblage-level effects. |
|
Objectivos»Goals:
Investigating whether and how marine organisms will be affected by Ocean Acidification (OA) has been a priority for research
in recent years. Hypothesized impacts on marine biodiversity (and on the ecological functions it sustains) are frequently
cited, despite most of the observed effects coming from experiments with single species.
We will start to address this issue by evaluating the pCO2 levels and corresponding pH reductions expectable for the seawater
of the studied location, the Ria Formosa lagoon. We will then use these target values in controlled CO2 perturbation experiments,
testing different types of coastal marine assemblages (benthic and pelagic) under realistic and locally relevant OA scenarios.
The response will be measured in terms of changes in diversity (i.e. number and evenness of taxa and functional groups) and
composition of the assemblages. The experiments will encompass a wide range of environmental conditions. Effects on consumer-resource
interactions will also be explicitly tested..

Coastal ocean acidification is expected to interfere with the physiology of marine bivalves. In this work, the effects of
acidification on the physiology of juvenile mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were tested by means of controlled CO2 perturbation
experiments. The carbonate chemistry of natural (control) seawater was manipulated by injecting CO2 to attain two reduced
pH levels: -0.3 and -0.6 pH units as compared with the control seawater. After 78 days of exposure, we found that the absorption
efficiency and ammonium excretion rate of juveniles were inversely related to pH. Significant differences among treatments
were not observed in clearance, ingestion and respiration rates. Coherently, the maximal scope for growth and dry tissue weight
were observed in mussels exposed to the most extreme pH reduction (¿pH= -0.6), suggesting that Mytilus galloprovincialis could
be tolerant to CO2 acidification, at least in the highly alkaline coastal waters of Ria Formosa (SW Portugal).

galloprovincialis", Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology 424, N/A: 89 - 98. Abstract
The carbonate chemistry of seawater from the Ria Formosa lagoon was experimentally manipulated, by diffusing
pure CO2, to attain two reduced pH levels, by-0.3 and-0.6 pH units, relative to unmanipulated seawater. After
84 days of exposure, no differences were detected in terms of growth (somatic or shell) or mortality of juvenile
mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis. The naturally elevated total alkalinity of the seawater (˜3550 µmol kg-1)
prevented under-saturation of CaCO3, evenunder pCO2 values exceeding 4000 µatm, attenuating the detrimental
effects on the carbonate supply-side. Even so, variations in shell weight showed that net calcification was reduced
under elevated CO2 and reduced pH, although the magnitude and significance of this effect varied
among size-classes. Most of the loss of shell material probably occurred as post-deposition dissolution in
the internal aragonitic nacre layer. Our results show that, even when reared under extreme levels of CO2-
induced acidification, juvenileM. galloprovincialis can continue to calcify and grow in this coastal lagoon environment.
The complex responses of bivalves to ocean acidification suggest a large degree of interspecific
and intraspecific variability in their sensitivity to this type of perturbation. Further research is needed to assess
the generality of these patterns and to disentangle the relative contributions of acclimation to local variations
in seawater chemistry and genetic adaptation.

responses to ocean acidification at local scales?", Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology 396, 2: 177 - 184. Abstract
We investigated the effects of ocean acidification on juvenile clams Ruditapes decussatus (average shell length 10.24 mm)
in a controlled CO2 perturbation experiment. The carbonate chemistry of seawater was manipulated by diffusing pure CO2, to
attain two reduced pH levels (by -0.4 and -0.7 pH units), which were compared to unmanipulated seawater. After 75 days we
found no differences among pH treatments in terms of net calcification, size or weight of the clams. The naturally elevated
total alkalinity of local seawater probably contributed to buffer the effects of increased pCO2 and reduced pH. Marine organisms
may, therefore, show diverse responses to ocean acidification at local scales, particularly in coastal, estuarine and transitional
waters, where the physical–chemical characteristics of seawater are most variable. Mortality was significantly reduced in
the acidified treatments. This trend was probably related to the occurrence of spontaneous spawning events in the control
and intermediate acidification treatments. Spawning, which was unexpected due to the small size of the clams, was not observed
for the pH -0.7 treatment, suggesting that the increased survival under acidified conditions may have been associated with
a delay in the reproductive cycle of the clams. Future research about the impacts of ocean acidification on marine biodiversity
should be extended to other types of biological and ecological processes, apart from biological calcification.

"Physiological energetics of juvenile clams (Ruditapes decussatus) in a high CO2 coastal ocean", Marine Ecology Progress Series 443, N/A: 97 - 105. ABSTRACT: Effects of coastal ocean acidification, other than calcification, were tested on juvenile clams Ruditapes decussatus
during a controlled CO2 perturbation experiment. The carbonate chemistry of natural (control) seawater was manipulated by
injecting CO2 to attain 2 reduced pH levels (–0.4 and –0.7 pH units) as compared with the control seawater. After 87 d of
exposure, we found that the acidification conditions tested in this experiment significantly reduced the clearance, ingestion
and respiration rates, and increased the ammonia excretion rate of R. decussatus seeds. Reduced ingestion combined with increased
excretion is generally associated with a reduced energy input, which will likely contribute to a slower growth of the clams
in a future high CO2 coastal ocean. These results emphasize the need for management policies to mitigate the adverse effects
of global change on aquaculture, which is an economically relevant activity in most coastal areas worldwide.

lagoon (Portugal)", Vie et Milieu / Life and Environment 61, 2: 107 - 118. ABSTRACT. – We studied the effect of wastewater on macrobenthic assemblages and local Ecological Quality Status (EcoQS) along
a pollution gradient. The study consisted of six sampling sites surrounding the discharge channel of a Wastewater Treatment
Plant located within Ria Formosa coastal lagoon. The total number of individuals was significantly higher at the discharge
point comparatively to the control site, while total number of species, species richness and diversity values revealed the
opposite pattern. Deposit-feeding were the most abundant trophic group, particularly at the inner sites, while the highest
contributions of suspension-feeding and carnivory groups were observed at external ones. The organic matter content was positively
correlated with the deposit-feeding group conferring a structural character of this variable near the plant discharge. M-AMBI
index was consistent with the ANOSIM and SIMPER analysis, successfully separating the sampling stations according to the distance
from the discharge and distinguishing the lower EcoQS of the inner sites not complying with the requirements of the Water
Framework Directive of a “Good” quality status. In addition, changes in ecological and biotic indices were negatively correlated
with variations of organic matter and positively correlated with salinity, corroborating the effect of these variables on
the composition and structure of macrobenthic communities.

Portugal)", Ecohydrology and Hydrobiology 9, 1: 55 - 71. Abstract
The implementation of the UNESCO demosite at the Guadiana estuary represents an excellent opportunity to demonstrate how to
adapt, mitigate and restore functioning of estuaries and coastal areas impacted by dams and climatic changes, using the Ecohydrology
approach. Worldwide estuaries are suffering similar anthropogenic impacts that affect ecosystem functioning, biodiversity
and resources. Therefore, the mesocosms experiments at the Guadiana Ecohydrology demosite constitute a collection of case
studies, whose results can be used for testing solutions for the sustainable management of other estuarine systems. We applied
the Ecohydrology concepts and methods to test: a) the usefulness of freshwater inflow pulses to regulate biodiversity and
to control microalgal blooms , by regulating nutrient ratios and thus enhancing the bottom-up control of water quality; b)
the usefulness of using the feeding ability of bivalve assemblages to control microalgal blooms (top-down control of water
quality, and; c) the role of salt marsh plants (Salicornia ramosissima) to reduce excessive concentrations of nutrients and
control estuarine water quality. Results show that the interplay between organisms (bivalves, plants) and hydrological factors
is a key for improving water quality and sustaining biodiversity and the good ecological status of this estuarine ecosystem.

(Crustacea, Decapoda): potential impacts and mitigation measures", Aquatic Invasions 4, 3: 501 - 506. Abstract
The cnidarian Blackfordia virginica and the adult of the caridean prawn, Palaemon macrodactylus are first recorded from the
Guadiana Estuary. The habitats and environmental conditions under which these species were found are described and the potential
impacts and mitigation measures for their introduction are discussed. The first observations of adults of these species were
made in July 2008, at the transitional zone of the estuary (brackish area). Most samples taken in the middle-estuary were
characterized by large densities of B. virginica (> 100 individuals 100 m-3), while P. macrodactylus was recorded in much
smaller densities (<0.01 individuals m-2). Despite a comprehensive survey of invertebrates done between 1999 and 2003, neither
of these species was previously detected in the Guadiana estuary. These observations may, therefore, coincide with the introduction
of these species to the Guadiana estuary. Small planktonic crustaceans are generally described as the main food items for
B. virginica. Our results show that the presence of the medusa was usually associated with a reduction of densities of all
zooplanktonic organisms, including eggs of Engraulis encrasicolus. The reduction of planktonic biomass could have severe implications
for organisms at upper trophic levels, such as E. encrasicolus, which use the Guadiana estuary as a nursery area and feed
mostly on small planktonic crustaceans. Moreover, the potential consumption of eggs by B. virginica could potentially increase
the impact on the nursery function of the estuary. The other alien species detected, P. macrodactylus, appears to be a strong
invader, able to colonise a wide geographical range. It has a strong osmoregulatory capacity, and is known to inhabit a wide
range of salinities, particularly if compared to similar native species (Crangon crangon and Palaemon longirostris). There
is clear potential for the occurrence of competition for food between P. macrodactylus and the native prawn,.

Excluding particular species or guilds of grazing gastropods from experimental areas on intertidal rocky shores is a manipulation
frequently used by marine ecologists. Manual removals, cages or fences are classical methods, but they usually require large
areas or multiple procedural controls to avoid experimental artefacts. In order to minimise some of those constraints, alternative
methods have been developed and are increasingly being used. The effects and limitations of these methods are, however, generally
assumed and hardly ever tested. The experiment described here was designed to compare the effectiveness of manual removals,
copper paint and sticky barriers in excluding intertidal grazing gastropods from experimental areas on a natural sandstone
platform in South-eastern Australia. The response of the grazing assemblage was evaluated for individual species and collectively
(integrating all species) by direct counts of individuals and from radular marks on wax discs. The observed patterns varied
considerably among species. As predicted, barriers of copper paint effectively excluded the limpet Cellana tramoserica, for
several weeks, while having no apparent effect on co-occurring species of grazing gastropods. Sticky barriers were also effective
in excluding C. tramoserica, but for shorter periods of time. Contrary to expectations, however, sticky barriers were generally
incapable of deterring the coiled snails Bembicium nanum and Nerita atramentosa. Barriers of copper paint are, therefore,
a cost-effective way to manipulate diversity (densities of individuals, number and composition of species) and function (intensity
of grazing) in this type of assemblage. Care must be taken to
clarify the underlying mechanisms and to identify adequate procedural controls.

survival in populations of Semibalanus balanoides", MARINE ECOLOGY-PROGRESS SERIES 275, N/A: 185 - 197. ABSTRACT:
The relative importance of recruitment and post-recruitment processes in determining adult density among marine species varies
considerably between species and populations. This study aimed to investigate the relative effects of variation in recruitment
and survival rates on the density dynamics of 3 spatially separated natural populations of the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides
(Isle of Man, SW Ireland and west Sweden). We analysed 2 different data-based stochastic matrix models of
open populations with space-limited recruitment. Assumption testing supported the application of matrix-model theory for studying
and comparing population variables of open populations. Recruitment was found to be partly dependent on free space, and mortality
was size-specific and independent of other vital rates. Model simulations showed that the relative importance of recruitment
and survival in shaping adult density depends on the existing variation of these vital rates at each location. In the Isle
of Man the variation in density was primarily caused by variability in recruitment, while in SW Ireland the variability in
survival induced the most variation. In west Sweden variation was high due to variability in both recruitment and survival.
A life-cycle elasticity analysis across locations indicated that the population dynamics were generally more sensitive to
changes in survival than to changes in recruitment. Also, locations with high variability in vital rates seemed better able
to buffer sudden changes in vital rates. In addition, differences in survival and growth produced population structures that
varied between populations. In the Isle of Man and west Sweden the populations consisted of mainly Size Category 1 individuals,
while the population in SW Ireland had a linear relationship between size category and the proportion of individuals.

"Population dynamics of the intertidal barnacle Semibalanus balanoides at three European locations: spatial scales of variability", Marine Ecology Progress Series 217, N/A: 207 - 217. ABSTRACT:
Spatial variability in the population dynamics of the intertidal acorn barnacle Semibalanus balanoides was investigated using
a hierarchical sampling programme. Variability in a number of population parameters (size distribution, density, % cover,
absolute growth and instantaneous mortality) was determined separately for new recruits and adults over 3 spatial scales.
Three locations, SW Ireland, the Isle of Man and the west coast of Sweden, which cover a large part of the European range
of this species, were selected to investigate variability over a large spatial scale (100s of kilometres). Two smaller scales,
shore (1000s of metres) and site (10s of metres) nested within each location were also used. In addition, temporal variation
over two 6 mo periods was also examined in the Isle of Man and Ireland. Most variability for all population parameters occurred
over the largest spatial scale (location). This was a direct result of differences between Sweden and the other 2 locations,
the Isle of Man and Ireland, which showed highly similar levels of all population parameters. The population of S. balanoides
at the Swedish location was characterised by high growth rates, large size, high levels of mortality and a large turnover
of bare space. At the spatial scale ‘shore’, only 1 population parameter, the growth rate of recruits, showed variability.
At the smallest scale of ‘site’, all parameters showed significant variability except growth rate of adults. Calculation of
variance components showed that differences between replicates (spatial scale: < 0.5 m) accounted for little of the overall
variability, in general less than the scales of site and shore. Examination of temporal variability over two 6 mo periods
revealed no difference between time periods and no significant interaction between temporal and spatial scales. Thus, there
was consistency of spatial variability over time. The potential causes of variability in population parameters of S. balanoides

Range, Pedro; Paula, José. 2001. "Distribution, Abundance and Recruitment of Chthamalus (Crustacea:} Cirripedia) Populations Along the Central Coast of Portugal", Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK 81, 03: 461 - 468. Abstract
The distribution, abundance and recruitment of Chthamalus species were studied for one year at two rocky shores on the central
coast of Portugal. Chthamalus montagui is the most abundant intertidal barnacle on the Portuguese mainland. Higher abundance
of C. montagui was found on the lower levels of the more sheltered shore, which is closer to the influence of the Tagus estuary.
Chthamalus stellatus was also present, in very low densities, and always confined to the lower level of the barnacle zone.
Chthamalus stellatus was more common at the shore farther away from the estuary, in which exposure to wave action is higher.
The metamorphs of C. stellatus settled at the studied shores are considered to be immigrants from other populations, where
the density of adults is sufficient for cross-fertilization to occur. Chthamalus spp. recruited almost continuously throughout
the year, with a peak between July and September and a gap during February and March. Variations in phytoplanktonic assemblages
and temperature may be the main factors controlling the reproductive season of Chthamalus spp. Recruitment was usually stronger
on the lower shore levels but extended for a longer period higher on the shore. Seasonal variations of C. montagui abundance
were greater on the lower levels of the more exposed shore. This is probably due to faster growth and higher mortality of
barnacle populations occupying the lower shore levels at the more exposed habitats.

"Variation in the Sizes of Chthamalid Barnacle Post-Settlement Cyprids on European Shores", Marine Ecology 22, 4: 307 - 322. Abstract.
As part of a wider study on the settlement and recruitment of Chthamalus spp. in Europe, this study investigated whether chthamalid
cyprids can be separated by length on a European scale. Variation in cyprid length with latitude and temporal variation at
selected localities were also examined. The lengths of cyprids collected between 1996¿–¿1999 on nine rocky shores in Europe
are reported. Elminius modestus cyprids were found only at Roscoff, NW France and could be distinguished due to their carapace
shape and length. They showed a unimodal length distribution, measuring between 450 and 625 µm, with no variation in length
between the two sampling dates (1997 and 1998). Based on carapace shape and length, the remaining cyprids in the collections
were identified as one of three chthamalid species, Chthamalus montagui, Chthamalus stellatus or Euraphia depressa. Bimodal
length distributions of chthamalid cyprids were seen on some shores, while others had a single small-sized modal group (representing
C. montagui on Atlantic shores and/or E. depressa in the Mediterranean) separated from a few distinctly larger cyprids (C.
stellatus). Metamorphs collected simultaneously with cyprid collections were identified as C. stellatus or C. montagui, except
at Roscoff, where E. modestus were also found. In southern Portugal, where all metamorphs collected were C. montagui and adult
C. montagui were the dominant barnacles, most cyprids measured between 350 and 550 µm long and this size distribution coincides
with the distribution expected for C. montagui. Cyprids collected on these four more southerly Portuguese shores had the same
modal length class (475 µm) and this remained constant between successive years at Luz and Albufeira, Algarve. The smallest
(350 µm long) wild chthamalid cyprids found were from southern Portugal and Italy. In Spain, France and Ireland the smallest
chthamalid cyprid was 425 µm long. The results from the present study support the hypothesis that .
