The aim of this study was to explore concepts of pregnancy, primary strategies for action and information/training needs during pregnancy. Scientific evidence has shown that intervention in periods of pregnancy and early life of the child is effective for the psychosocial development of children, with repercussions on their mental health throughout life cycle. Sometimes topics chosen by health professionals for preparation courses may not be the ones requested by the 'pregnant' couples. A total of eight pregnant women and five health professionals participated in the study (N=13 participants). A semi-structured interview was conducted with each participant. According to both groups, pregnant women face the stress associated with pregnancy by seeking others to speak, searching relevant information through media or enrolling in a preparation course. For both groups, a potential psychosocial training course after work time, seems of extreme relevance. Although the Portuguese law allows women to take time off for a training course, this seems to continue being a problem for them, as well as for primary care givers. An improved understanding of concepts and requirements for pregnant women, as well as knowledge of current interventions involving them, will lead to a better match between needs and supply. This study, although limited in its number of of participants, may contribute as a possible screening tool for clinical practice, taking into account both perspectives – users and care givers. .

"Assessment and intervention within Social Integration Income (RSI) in Portugal: professionals’ perspective.", Revista Transcultural 5, 1: 25 - 35. Recent studies show that professionals working with families in need have a negative perception of these. More specifically, practitioners mention the quality of the relationship, illustrating the difficulty of families to follow their recommendations. This study intended to explore the professionals’ reactions to a positive and socio-ecological approach in the assessment and intervention with families receiving the Social Integration Income [RSI] in Portugal. The methodology was qualitative, and we conducted two focus groups with RSI professionals, who have different educational backgrounds (e.g. social work, social education, psychology) and play the role of Case Managers and Direct Action Helpers in the working team they belong to (N=15). The inclusion criteria was based on the belonging to different teams, different educational backgrounds and having a varying number of years of experience in RSI. Both focus groups were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. The findings showed differences and similarities in the social representations of an RSI family, as well as in the assessment and intervention strategies adopted by each professional. In general, the professionals seemed to be open to adopt a positive and socio-ecological approach in the assessment and intervention with RSI families. However, the results pointed out the need of law change, so that it does not direct the technical assessment and intervention towards problems, but to the promotion of a positive and holistic change of RSI beneficiary families. Adopting a positive and a socio-ecological approach can contribute to positive families, enabling them to not rely exclusively on the professionals.
