Nas últimas décadas ocorreram mudanças significativas na área das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). Com a evolução das novas tecnologias, o crescimento da Internet e a massificação da banda larga, surgiram novas formas de comunicar recorrendo a tecnologias inovadoras, baseadas no protocolo IP (Internet Protocol). Surgiram assim as primeiras aplicações de voz sobre IP (VoIP), vulgarmente designadas por softphones, que vieram revolucionar a forma de comunicar, com custos substancialmente reduzidos, se não mesmo inexistentes. Este artigo descreve um estudo exploratório sobre a utilização desta tecnologia em Portugal por utilizadores finais. Deste estudo, baseado numa amostra jovem, escolarizada, com bons conhecimentos da tecnologia VoIP e constituída por 966 participantes, conclui-se que a grande maioria usa-a para fins particulares, recorrendo à Internet para efectuar chamadas, sendo o preço um factor crucial para a sua utilização. Quanto às aplicações usadas e respectiva qualidade do som, as direccionadas somente para o VoIP obtêm melhor classificação do que aquelas que oferecem uma gama de serviços adicionais, e a qualidade de som não é um factor critico na sua adopção. Este estudo serviu igualmente para recolher as preferências dos utilizadores desta tecnologia, de modo a conceber um Agente Inteligente, actuando como assistente pessoal, que permite auxiliar o utilizador na escolha da melhor aplicação VoIP que vá de encontro aos seus requisitos.
