Rui Quartau completed a PhD degree in Marine Geosciences in 2007. His research has been focused on the study of the insular shelves of volcanic islands, a poorly explored subject which makes him the worldwide leader in the area. His major accomplishment was to understand how the waves during changing sea-levels shaped the insular shelf landscapes. From that starting point he started looking to other influencing processes such as volcanic progradation, vertical movements, sedimentation and submarine landslides which led to his current scientific aim: to understand the influence of all these factors in controlling the lifespan of volcanic islands. Since 2008 he has been working as an independent investigator and has published 11 articles in journals of the first quartile of the ISI impact factor (including Earth-Science Reviews and Geology) and 2 book chapters. Additionally, there are 2 other articles accepted and other 2 in review which total sums 15 ISI articles produced in 7 years. He has 14 years of marine surveying experience in acquisition of multibeam bathymetry, HR seismic reflection (chirp, boomer and sparker), sediment sampling and video imagery data. He was chief scientist in 6 cruises (including one international). He is also responsible for a state-of-the-art 2D and 3D Seismic Interpretation Laboratory. The Lab has been used in research and industry projects and for teaching under and post-graduates. His tasks involve the management and update of the system hardware and software and training of the current users: 5 Post-docs, 3 PhD’s and several undergraduates. He has already supervised 2 MSc and is currently supervising 1 more MSc, and informally contributed to the supervision of 3 PhD; two of his students are from foreign Universities (Italian and German). He participates in a European Project (ASTARTE) with the responsibility for delivering in WP2 and WP3 the tsunami sources, generation mechanisms and their long-term recurrence for the archipelagos of Madeira and Azores. He is a member of the ICES Working Group on the Effects of Extraction of Marine Sediments on the Marine Ecosystem. He was also successful in getting funding for research, including one international project. All of this accounts for his high degree of internationalization and capacity of leading groups. Besides research, he has been involved in applied projects (marine aggregate evaluation in the Azores and the Portuguese Maritime Space Management Plan), which accounts for his ability to work on practical subjects. He has been reviewer of several ISI journals and is currently the Earth Sciences editor of the Portuguese Society for the Natural Sciences with the responsibility of science dissemination. Due to his recognized research and technical experience he has been continuously invited to give lectures in courses at the Universities of Lisbon and Aveiro. Course themes included marine aggregate evaluation and geophysical and geological mapping techniques.
