The Void and the Atom (after and beyond Bachelard)

Unidade da Ciência

About

This series of seminars is devoted to exploring Bachelard's particular atomist outlook as a way of opening up a wider examination of atomist philosophy in its various guises

The organiser of the seminar, Zbigniew Kotowicz, will be responsible for leading the seminars and inviting guest speakers. The first guest speaker will be Dr David Webb, Awards Leader in Philosophy, Chair of the Faculty Research Degrees Committee, Staffordshire University, England with a seminar: "On Michel Serres, Lucretius and Atomism", which will be held on 13 December 2011, at 11.00 hrs.

Further projected invited speakers include:

  • David Sedley, Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy, University of Cambridge who is a leading authority of Greek Atomism.
  • Chrisoph Luthy, professor of the history of science in the Faculties of Philosophy and of Science at Radboud University Nijmegen who is a specialist on early modern atomism.
  • Brigitte Falkenburg, professor of philosophy at the University of Dortmund who is an authority on atomist thought in contemporary science.
  • The seminars will take place on the second Tuesday of the month at 11.00 hrs, unless indicated otherwise.

  1. The Void and the Atom (after and beyond Bachelard) - Session 4, por Zbigniew Kotowicz no âmbito do Projecto Interno Bachelard, Ciência e Poética, 14 de Fevereiro, 11h00, FCUL, Sala 4.2.07Abstract: After the last December session in which David Webb presented Epicurean atomism (via Michel Serres's commentary on De Rerum Natura of Lucretius) the next session will concentrate on the earlier thought of Democritus. The emphasis will be on its relation to other pre-Socratic thought and the necessary modifications to the atomist thought imposed by developments in contemporary physics.

  8. Theories of Space, Time and Matter in Aristotle - Session 10, por José Félix Costa no âmbito do Projecto Interno Bachelard, Ciência e Poética, 21 de Novembro, 15h00, na FCUL, na sala 3.1.09.Abstract: We analise Aristotle concept of space as body, of place, and the objections to the existence of extracosmic space. We will try to emphasize that the concepts of closed space and time in Aristotle are not exactly those brougth to us by tradition of his commentators, but instead, a clever and deeper version of it. Then, we turn to Aristotle's objections to the motion in a void and the conflict of ideas between Epicurus and Aristotle. We discuss circular time in Eudemus and Proclo. Finally, we will consider whether space is immobile, inert or dynamic, from Aristotle's cosmos to Theophastus' and the Neoplatonists' views.
