Horizon Europe

International Cooperation

PERIN – Portugal in Europe Research and Innovation Network (PERIN) and Horizon Europe

PERIN results of the definition and professionalisation of the Promotion Office of the Framework Program for R&DT (GPPQ). FCT, as one of PERIN's founding partners and through its Delegates and National Contact Points, will assure the national representation and the coordination of the promotion of research and innovation activities related to Pillar I and the Horizontal Activity (Widening) of Horizon Europe (2021-2027). FCT will coordinate the support to the scientific and technological community for:

European Research Council

Investigator-driven programme supporting frontier research through a bottom-up, pan-European competition in all fields of science.

  • Starting Grant (StG) for researchers 2-7 years post PhD.
  • Consolidator Grant (CoG) for researchers 7-12 years post PhD.
  • Advanced Grant (AdG) for established research leaders.
  • Synergy Grant (SyG) for 2-4 outstanding PIs with complimentary background.
  • Proof of Concept Grant (PoC) to explore the innovation potential of the PI's research results.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions

Along Individual fellowships, the MSCA help develop training networks, promote staff exchanges and fund mobility programmes with an international flavour. Grants provided by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions are available for all stages of a researcher’s career. Fellows include PhD candidates and those carrying out more advanced research.

  • Doctoral Networks (DN) (former ITN) for universities, research centres and other sectors to train researchers to doctorate level.
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) (former IF) for researchers looking to give their career a boost by working abroad.
  • Staff Exchange (SE) (former RISE) for short-term exchanges of personnel between academic, industrial and commercial organisations worldwide.
  • Cofunding of regional, national and international programmes (COFUND) providing organisations with additional funding for their own researcher training and career development programmes.
  • MSCA & Citizens (CITIZENS) (former NIGHT) is an annual Europe-wide public event dedicated to popular science and fun learning. Around 30 countries and 300 cities are involved.

Research Infrastructures

The RI Work Programme 2021-22 includes 5 Destinations (packages of actions aimed at contributing to its objectives and expected impacts). Each Destination will be implemented by means of calls for proposals. Each Call for proposals will include one or more topics.

  • INFRA-DEV: A well-functioning European Research Infrastructure landscape.
  • INFRA-EOSC: Enabling an operational, open and FAIR EOSC ecosystem.
  • INFRA-SERV: RI services to support health research, accelerate the green and digital transformation, and advance frontier knowledge.
  • INFRA-TECH: Next generation of scientific instruments, tools and methods and advanced digital solutions.
  • INFRA-NET: Network connectivity - enabler for collaboration without boundaries.

Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area

A pallet of different funding instruments aimed at i) individual and institutional connectivity (COST and Twinning), ii) balanced brain circulation in Europe (ERA-Chairs, and ERA Policy linked to MSCA), iii) institutional and regional reform and transformation (Teaming and Excellence Universities), iv) linking science and business (Excellence Hubs and EIC Accelarator), and v) capacity building and inclusiveness (NCP Support, "Hop On", Seal of Excellence). Main widening actions described below.

  • Twinning stands for institutional networking, aimed at strengthening a specific research field. Widening organisation linked to at least 2 leading research organisations. Projects of 1.5M€ for 3 years.
  • Teaming to create new (or significant update of existing) centres of excellence in Widening countries through a coupling process with a leading scientific institution. Projects of 6-8 years with around 15 M€ funding.
  • ERA-CHAIRs: bringing excellence to institutions by attracting outstanding scientists and their teams as game changers to universities or research organisations. Projects of around 2.5M€ for 5-6 years.
  • Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST): bottom-up and open networking projects aimed at individuals, and in all domains of knowledge. Each thematic network runs for 4 years with an average budget of 0.5 M€.
