Renewing Residence in Portugal
Article 130, paragraph 2 – Renewing an EU long-term Residence Permit
Documents Required
Applications for the extension of stay are submitted in any SEF’s directorate or regional delegation, on a standard form, signed by the applicant or his/her legal representative, or on-line, holding the necessary documentation as follows:
- Two recent, identical photographs, in colour with blank background, and easily identifiable (only for appointments at Odivelas, Aveiro or Braga SEF bureau)
- Residence permit to be renewed
- Passport or any other valid travel document
- Permission for SEF to check portuguese criminal record, when the stay is intended to exceed 90 days (except for under 16 years old)
Notes
- The EU long-term residence permit is valid for 5 years, and is automatically renewable
- The application for the permit renewal can be submitted by the interested person from 90 and 30 days previous to the expiry date of the permit
- In case the application for the permit renewal is submitted after the expiry date, the application should be followed of a proof of stay in the national territory or supporting evidence of the reasons for the absence
- Residents must communicate to SEF, within 60 days from the date in which occurs, any change on their civil status or residence
- The residence permit may not be renewed for public order or for public safety reasons
- The residence permit of any foreign national declared as contumacious is not renewed, as soon as the submission of a supporting evidence in which such declaration has expired is made
- The residence permit of foreign nationals serving a prison sentence can be renewed as long as their removal has not been ordered only
